I have windows xp on my computer, had i known what a pain in my caboose this system was going to be, i would never have bought it. but anyways....

i've tried downloading e-books and such things and the computer stashes them somewhere for me NOT to be able to find them! I bought an ebook from amazon but cant find it ANYwhere. I've tried searching, going thru my temp files all to no luck. any advice?

Try going and download something else and play close attention to where it's downloading to.
Windows by default downloads to the same place everytime unless you tell it to do otherwise . It might help to download another e-book.
Hope this helps.:D

If you have no idea what you named the file or where you saved it, you can search by date to see the most recently saved files.

In XP, click Start/Search/All Files and Folders/When Was it Modified, and then specify the dates you want to search.

The computer stashes them for him not to be able to find them...not him forgetting where he saved them lol :p

chad, different people have different level's of computer knowledge, there isn't any need to put someone down

oh, really not trying to put someone down at all. I just find it funny that its always the computers fault :p

No harm done hopefully

Havoc,

Your question made me laugh, I am setting here with my new book...WINDOWS XP Timesaving Techniques For DUMMIES. I checked it out from the library before purchasing it...I love it, so looks like I will need my own copy.

Oooh! I think I can help with this one!! :bounce: I have also been a victim of not knowing where the computer downloaded things!! :hyper: I also have windows xp.

Go to start
My documents

In the documents file, look around.....there is a folder labeled My Downloads....(mine always shows up in the same place...high up on the right side column). Anything I have ever downloaded has turned up in this folder. ::yes::

Hope this is where yours has gotten to! :p

I absolutely despise this OS for a multitude of reasons. It was great in the beginning, but the longer it's installed the hinckier it gets! I love it when MS Word starts operating of its own accord, too! One day you have page set-ups that you're used to and the next it loads a different template all together! Geesh--if you haven't paid attention to the actual settings prior to the gremlins, you have no idea what needs to be changed to get it back to where it belongs. (Don't you just love all my technical lingo. . :) )

I hope you were able to find your ebooks, Havoc.:) I thnk Kathy gives good advice on locating your missing stuff.:)

Tess, XP also comes with wonderful thing called "system restore." It's under start, prorams, accessories, system tools. It lets you restore the PC to a previous date. It's saved my butt twice now!!!

I downloaded Spybot the other day and can't find it anywhere. I also have Ad-aware...with that it gave me a neat little icon on my desktop and everything! Spybot didn't do that. I wonder where it is. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Yep, know all about System Restore. . .I tried that too--it helped for about a day!

Something seems to be overriding the "normal" template. I figured out that all I need do is change the view to 100%--somehow it keeps changing the page view and size of the view--it sometimes just pops up as a "page preview" type layout with the smaller sizing. This is on a new document. Then I had issues with adding page numbers the other days--that was gray and couldn't be added. I found that if I changed the layout view and the view size--the page numbers were accessible again.

I've been having problems with things not printing properly from Word too. Everything shows up perfectly in print preview and on the document BUT when it prints a line skips in the printing. It could be anywhere in the document, sometimes more than one line. Check the formatting and everything is fine--maybe two or three prints the line of text will be there, the first or fourth it won't. Then I've had Word just crash itself in the middle of preparing a document--nothing else open, just Word. . .most of the time it saves or recovers the document, once it did not and there was major work involved!

All of these issues do "report" to MS when they happen, except the template changing thing--that's just got me stymied. So far, I'm just finding XP very unreliable as an OS.

Havoc, did you manage to find your downloads yet??

It wasn't in the downloads file that is sitting in the Documents file??

What if you go to start, search, then type in the documents (e-books??) name...that should be able to find it for you. Be sure to look in 'hidden files and folders' too!!

Let me know!!::yes::
