99% of the time domestically I'm in the middle because I'm flying with my husband who we normally have take the aisle (he's tall) but when we've done long-haul flights it depended on the seat booked.
2023 Europe Air France window but exit row, husband in middle. Technically the window did not cost extra to book as Air France considered it "obstructed" i.e. the door was slightly jutted out but as I am short it had no bearing on my leg area. Athens to the U.S. British Airways window but exit row, husband in the middle. Both these times my husband compromising and giving me the window but with having the leg room for him.
2024 Europe
Virgin Atlantic premium economy in a two seater window, husband aisle. While I did have to get up and go to the bathroom more than my husband it still wouldn't have changed his decision to want the aisle. On the way back to the U.S. Play Airlines middle, husband aisle. Play laid out like SWA 3X3. On the way from Copenhagen to Iceland (play connects in Iceland) no one sat on the window so I moved to it.
2024 To/From Japan Zipair business class/ay flat layout 1X2X1 both of us opted for window so he was in the row in front of me, there were two seats in the middle but we both wanted more privacy and window.
2025 Iberia to Europe business class/lay flat same situation as Zipair opted for window he was in front of me. Iberia back to the U.S. had to be separated by a row but both selected window same side of the plane.
2025 Europe upcoming is Virgin Atlantic Upper/lay flat same situation as before with window/layout of the plane so opted for windows so he is in front of me.
One thing to consider while I would hate to be woken up personally speaking I do know that you really should get up and move, stretch, etc on long-haul flights with or without needing to go to the bathroom X amount of time. That said I also personally wear compression socks on long-haul.
I don't put my head on the window for sleeping it actually strains my neck if I sleep too long with it in one direction rather than straight, I do have a neck pillow that is decently compressible that I used on our Air France and British Airways flight that helps your neck.
