wind and fifth wheel at DW

Okay, we heard a story about a family buying brand new fifth wheel and took it to DW about 20 years ago. And a straight line wind came along and blew the camper over on its side. OMG! We're planning on buying a fifth wheel and taking it to FW eventually. What are the chances of this happening? Has anyone seen this happen? I'm thinking maybe this was right before a hurricane or unusually bad storm. I don't know....how common is this?? By the way, no, it's not changing my mind about buying the camper..just curious.

Let me add...my family and I weathered some pretty bad storms in a pop up when I was growing up but that was in Texas. We never went rolling. lol! So, surely this can't be a common thing even in Florida?! Am I right?

We have a 30' 5th wheel and have been thru Huricanes, Rita, Ike, in texas and our 5th wheel still stands. We were in FW several years back when a mild one passed by FW and we survived that one also.. I think it would have to be a pretty good gust, but I have seen where large 18 wheelers have been blown over..

We've had a 37' fiver and our current 35' fiver over the past 10 years. I don't recall ever hearing of one tipping, I'm sure under the right circumstances it could happen, but with rear jacks, landing gear, wheels on the ground and we also have a pin tri-pod, its seems pretty stable under severe weather. I'm more worried about trees falling on me than blowing over.

I really do not think you need to worry. We used to live in South Florida and were there for three big hurricane. Our motorhome was in an outside storage lot along with many 5th wheels, and none got turned over. It is even less of a concern in central Florida, because the winds are greatly reduced by the time the storm gets there. Of course there is the danger of tornadoes, but the odds are pretty low.

You have nothing to worry about. We have been thru some pretty bad storms in our 5th wheel and have never had any problems.

As a side note, we were at FW when "Wilma" hit. Cast members had came around passing out notices that they might have to evacuate the campground. The next morning they came around again telling us we had to be out by 11:00am. They put us up at the All-star and there was plenty of room for all the rv's. So, if they know a storm is coming theymake arrangements to prevent damages to campers and this also allows Disney to move it's employees around to help in other parts of the property.

Enjoy the 5th wheel. We have had TT's, Class A, and 5th wheels. We actually went from a Class A back to a 5th wheel because we enjoyed it so much more.

We were there during Hurricane Wilma. It was our first MNSSHP and we were in the Magic Kingdom as the hurricane was coming in. Lots of rain and wind during the night. We were staying at the All Stars Movies. That was before we bought our Airstream.
