i'm supposed to go with my mother and sister( that alone might be something to remember ) and having never been there wonder what lenses to take since pack mule hubby has to stay home so i'll be lugging it myself which means 1-2 lenses. is most stuff inside? outside? wide angle? zoom? doubt i'll have a lot of time to compose shots( neither are very patient) so probably the 70-200 since it's sharp enough to allow cropping ...anyone have any ideas for the other?

I assume you mean Colonial Williamsburg.....

I would take the kit lens and the 70-200mm. If you can fit a third, I would probably add the 28-135.

You will want the wider lens for photos of the buildings, etc. The zoom will be good for people shots, animals, and details. It is summer so there won't be much in the way of gorgeous flowers so you can leave the macro behind. Unless you are planning night shots, I would leave the tripod too - if they see you with one, they will question you because they are very particular about "professional" photographers and assume anyone with a tripod is a pro. Make sure you have a polarizer for your lenses too.

I was just there in June... they dont want you taking a lot of time in the "tour" areas to take shots (like the Govenor's Palace and the Capitol). They want to keep it moving. And no chewing gum! :

My family is headed to W'burg and other nearby points of Colonial history interest, in October. Like you, I'm mullling my lens choices. Like WDW, W'burg involves a lot of walking so whatever gear one takes, must be carried all day. I have been to W'burg a few times in the past and there are some interesting indoor shots to be had, too, which might argue in favor of a fast prime, like your 50mm. I feel sure I'll tote mine, given the compact size and weight.

There are places where a w/a would be nice, but I would think your 28-135, with the 1.6X Canon crop might be a good all-around lens. My personal shooting style is toward the long end, which means that I'd be hard pressed to leave my 70-300VR behind, but depending on your approach to photography, the 28-135 + 50mm might be all you'd need.

Sha, this is my mother's idea and i really don't even know what is nearby, usually i am the "trip coordinator" in my immediate family but in this case i lack seniority so i'll have to go with the flow ...we're only going to be there for a few days so am i guessing that will be the only place we go.

Ed, i rarely shoot under 70-100 at home( i really think its cause i can't see so i'm shocked to see what i'm missing )so i'll probably end up taking all 3. i like the 70-200 because i can get some decent closeups with it as well as a little zoom...but the 50 probably will not be wide enough so i'll maybe want the 28-135 as well. i really want a wider angle but that isn't going to happen before we go.

Yorktown and Jamestown is there... historically both are neat... Jamestown is neat. That was part of the trip we did. My moms family came into the settlement. If you like history, its nice. Its the oldest "perm." settlement in the states.

I have 3 lenses... 18-55mm(F3.5-5.6), 50-200mm (F4-5.6) and 70-300mm (F4-5.5). as far as which one I used the most... I have no idea.... hard to say.

I was there in January. There is a mixture of indoor and outdoor shooting opportunities. Bring the 50mm f1.8 (I wish I'd bought one before going), it will do well indoors

Your 28-135 will come in handy for outdoor shots
