We are planning on stopping at Williamsburg Va on the way home from WDW this year. We have never stayed there and I am looking for two questions to be answered. First, I am looking for a nice place to stay that is reasonable. We want to stay at Kingsmill but after 10 days at WDW it looks a little pricey. Also, are there any BAD places to stay. Obviously I want to avoid them and stay out of that part of town.

I often look at the motels in my town and think, if out of state people only knew what type of place they were staying in they would NEVER have made reservations there.

The Great Wolf Lodge is awesome!! Fantastic indoor waterpark. They also have an interactive game called Magi Quest- great fun.

We stayed at the Marriott's Manor Club at Ford's Colony. We had a screened in porch outside our room, a sink and microwave. The rooms were beautiful. There is an indoor pool, but it isn't connected to the rooms so you have to walk or drive to the pool, that was the only downside for us. There is an outdoor playground, tennis courts and a little convienience store where you can get Starbucks, Pizza Hut, milk juice etc, and other snacks.

There are probably some "not so clean" hotels around there. To be honest, since I live near there, I don't have any personal experience with the hotels other than how they look on the outside.

But, I just wanted to assure you that the area as a whole is nice and safe...no "bad parts of town".

Thanks so much especially when it comes to the fact that there are no bad parts of town.

There are no really rough parts of town in Williamsburg. It's a sleepy town. ;) You probably don't want to stay at the Super 8 type places down there though. I think there is a new Days Inn close to the shopping area where you want to be. Personally, I'd stay near the colonial area and just take a 10-15 minute drive to the mall. There are more places to choose from as far as eating and lodging. There is a newer Hilton Garden Inn that is fairly new. I'm sure there is a Sheraton, Crowne Plaza, Best Western type of facilities. Maybe even a Courtyard but I can't remember. Is it just 2 of you? You may want to consider a bed and breakfast instead(ton of them to choose from and nice!). Check out bedandbreakfast dot com and "colonial williamsburg."

DO take the time to eat at one of the tavern's at Colonial Williamsburg. They are great! Reserve early. It can be a little pricey so if you aren't budgeting for that maybe take a little break from shopping and have lunch there instead. No reservations for lunch - it's first come, first serve. They may have some entertainment outside for you to enjoy while you wait. ;)

Do you want to visit the colonial area, or just visit the town and shop? If you want to visit the colonial area - which is my family's favorite spot outside anything Disney! - and you are feeling a bit cramped in the budget, then stay at the Governor's Inn, which is part of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation property. You can get good deals on the historical area passes, as well as have any purchases made from any CWF shop sent back to your room, just like Disney! They also have refillable mugs good for one year. Sound familiar?

It's just a short walk to the Colonial area, too. We've stayed at four of the CWF hotel (ranging in price from the Governor's to the Williamsburg Inn), and they're all a few block walk. There's a good shuttle service around the area, too.

I am bringing this back in case anyone has been to Williamsburg recently and has more info on lodging. I do not want to pay an arm and a leg and although I would love to stay at Kings Mill we are doing this on the way back from two weeks at Vistana Village so I want a nice name brand hotel but not 200 per night.

There are lots of hotel chains to choose from many right on Richmond Road in the thick of things. There is a nice Holiday Inn Express, Springhill Suites and Residence Inn-just google.

Don't forget to eat at the Trellis, or The Cheese Shop or even the Fat Canary-all on Duke of Gloucester Street. You really can't go wrong with any place in Williamsburg. If you wanted to stay in a family run hotel on the York River, try the Duke Of York. Yorktown is 12 miles via the Colonial Parkway from Williamsburg. They have really spiffed up the historic triangle for the 400th anniv. of Jamestown. Have fun!

Thanks so much. We are looking at a bunch of places but I always am leary of going to a new place and not having word of mouth recommendations. It is funny. I live in a city in Mass and there are a few hotels that are NOT the best even though they are chians. I think of people visiting Boston and staying on the outskirts at these hotels and them not knowing what I know. I guess ignorance is bliss and often wonder if I have stayed unknowingly in hotels with bad reputations and not known it despite the fact we always stay at what we think is a reputable chain.

As a matter of fact there is a Quality Inn in POrtland Me. in which the 911 highjackers stayed the night before the fateful day! We drive by it all the time and really it gives me the creeps. They have not restricted the room in which they stayed so many others have stayed there since but jeez talk about bad spiritual vibes!!

Death by Chocolate=OMG!! YUMMO! I prefer Diamonds on Ice. You get a sampling of that day's homemade ice creams paired with two diamonds of hazelnut chocolate torte cake. YIPPPIE!!

The Trellis is soooooo good. I highly recomend lunch over dinner. You get some killer food at a cheaper $ and less stuffy when it comes to what you wear. You can also dine outside watching folks stroll the Duke of Gloucester. ENJOY!!!!!

I haven't stayed there yet, but I won the Farifield Inn, 1402 Richmond Rd on Priceline for $50/night for 6/23-25. The pics on the FI website are very nice. Hope it lives up to the website!!!
