Williamsburg VA budget trip!

So we will be there for a week and I,m trying to figure out what to do each day. Sat.travel day Sun. colonial williamsburg Mon.busch gardens Tues.water park Wed.busch gardens Thur. colonial williamsburg & water park Fri. busch gardens Sat.travel day. So does this sound good? Should I do more half days? What would you do?:flower3:

I would not do Colonial Williamsburg on a Sunday. You can still walk around but not much is "open." We made that mistake once, lol.

We do BG once a year, and usually make a long weekend of it. My kids are young, but I like to do Jamestown first (the archeological site, not the fake site) I ask the kids if they would like to live inside that tiny stockade with no air conditioning-- what would they eat, what would they build? Then we go to Williamsburg and they can see what the settlers were able to accomplish in only 100 years. From wattle-and-daub to real buildings is a pretty impressive leap forward, even to an 8 year old. DH likes to hit Yorktown, too. It's pretty wild that they went from mud houses to "real" towns to an independent country in 200 years. Another plug for the actual Jamestowne, the archaeology is ongoing. Every year we go they've found more. When I was a kid, they thought the settlement was somewhere under the river (which had changed course). Now they've found it. We went a few years ago and they were excavating inside the original stockade, now all of that is in an exhibit in the Smithsonian. For me it's really neat watching it all unfold. My grandkids will learn it all in a history file on some digital thingie that has replaced books-- but my kids and I get to be there when it happens. That's pretty awesome.

As far as best places to eat in BG. I *HATE* the Festhaus. It's dark, and the german potato salad is sweet and served hot. It's a nasty shock if you're not expecting it. I like the smokehouse in New France. We usually get one big plate each for DH and me, and that's enough for the whole family. Oh, and the fried pickles are REALLY good.

Make sure you catch the carillon clock in Germany on one of the hours... it's not as great as the "real" ones in Europe, but the kids all love it!

Oh No!! We have CW scheduled for a Sunday too, along with a Tuesday. I figured out of CW, BG and Water Country, CW would be the least crowded on a Sunday. Well, it sounds like it will be - because nothing is open! I did notice they didn't seem to have as many programs on Sunday as they did on Tuesday..........hmmm. I might have to do some last minute re-evaluation on that. Bummer.........

Do you know off-hand what is open? I have never been there, so I really have no clue...

I'm a local. Sunday mornings at BG are not bad at all (before the church goers start to roll in). We like to go right when it opens on Sunday mornings :)

I second eating in France at the smokehouse. That's where we had dinner last night. DD and I shared the 1/2 chicken platter that came with a breast, thigh & a wing, waffle fries and a roll. YUMMY!

Thanks for the tip, maybe I will switch BG with CW on Sunday. I hate last minute changes - we leave in four days!! But I would be more irritated if nothing was open at CW.

Do you know if I can take the Bounce Pass to BG and get it activated, or does it have to be the CW Visitor Center?

That I don't know. I didn't see it on BG's website, but I could have missed it. I would try calling BG to find out.

ETA - I just found this under the "ticket purchase" sections on BG's website. Looks like you should be able to redeem your bounce voucher there!

Voucher MUST be exchanged for a Williamsburg Bounce Ticket at a Busch Gardens Williamsburg/Water Country USA ticket window or at the Colonial Williamsburg's Visitor Center when open.

That's a great week to come here IMO! Most places are back in school, so a lot of the visitors are gone and it will be mostly locals. We LOVE to go to both BG and WC during that last week before Labor Day :)

great thread!! can anyone tell me how long a drive from NYC to Williamsburg TIA :thumbsup2

My husband makes the drive from NYC (where he works :sad2:) to the Richmond area a lot and it's a crap shoot every time. Traffic on 95 most of the way down is terrible and once you hit the DC area, forget it. On a good day, he can do it in 5 1/2 to 6 hours (add another 45 minutes to an hour to get to W'burg). Some days it's taken as many as 8 to 10. If you can travel in the middle of the night, that would be my suggestion :)

If you log on to the Colonial Williamsburg website you can pull up the "This Week" and it will show you what is open.

You should definitely sign up to do "RevQuest: The Sign of the Lion and the Unicorn." It's another great way to get the kids highly involved - a cell phone with texting is required, and there is a mobile website for it, but a smartphone is not needed to complete your mission. http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/content/summer/spy-central.html

They also have a really great kids website http://www.history.org/kids/visitUs/index.cfm

Actually - ALL of the schools except a few private schools will still be out. The schools in counties/towns east of Kings Dominion don't go back to school until the Tuesday after Labor Day. I've only lived here 8 years, but from what I understand several years ago the big tourism companies/towns (Kings Dominion, Virginia Beach, Busch etc) all got together and lobbied for legislation to keep the kids (And therefore their cheap labor) out of school until the end of tourism season. It's nicknamed the Kings Dominion Law. So, while the parks will be less crowded the last week in August than they are now, we don't go back to school until the Tuesday after labor day.

:rotfl: okay, so I previewed before posting and realized you were talking about other schools being back in session, not local schools! Yes, most of the Southern states will be back in school (next week for many) and half of the state of VA will be. So we will have less tourists.

Remember that you can also always walk around CW and go into the shops free of charge. You just can't go into any of the museums without a ticket. So if you wanted to walk around one evening and "get the lay of the land" you could do that also.

Don't forget to buy your meal passes for Busch Gardens online before you go. When I go with my 3 girls we buy 2 of the $14 meal vouchers (entree, 2 sides and a drink) and that more than easily feeds the 4 of us, sometimes even with extra if we end up getting a larger meal. (for example there's a meal in Italy that is manacotti, spaghetti and chicken parm - then you add 2 sides and a drink and that will fill up all 3 of my girls on one meal ticket. There's also a rib & chicken platter in France) Das Festhaus is not bad, but it's not as great as Trappers Smokehouse. The one thing Das Festhaus has going for it is large air conditioned seating - but it's the ONLY air conditioned seating in the park and it can be crowded at regular meal times. It has really good pizza for an amusement park (doesn't taste frozen at all) and the bistro sandwiches are very very good.

Water Country has a similar meal voucher program, but the very few times we've eaten at WC we haven't found anything worth finishing or repeating. So we either go at opening and leave around 1 for a late lunch, go between lunch and dinner or do an early dinner and go after dinner for the evening. There are not any really close restaurants to WC (unless you count the starbucks and snack counter in Target next door), there's a subway about 1.5 miles up the road near Harris Teeter, but there are a lot of fast food type places just outside of Busch (and easily accessible to WC) but WC has a better picnic area in the parking lot.

Sorry, you are right and that's kinda of what I meant. I guess I just didn't state it clearly :). I meant most kids other than those of us locally, here in VA, are back in school, so the tourists are pretty much gone and therefore, you are only dealing with locals, which in my experience, makes BG & WC a heck of a lot less croweded :). Thanks for clarifying.

bas71873 thanks, so maybe we should take the drive there on a weekend instead of week day?

In the summer, weekend vs. weekday doesn't really matter sorry to say. I was in the DC area over the weekend and 95 was a mess. I came home via Route 17. If you can do Route 301, that will help. I know my cousin uses 301 when they travel here from the Baltimore area.

You just DO NOT want to the hit the DC/Northern VA area anytime after 2:00/3:00 PM heading Southbound. When DH leaves, he leaves NYC on a Thursday around 4:00 and usually makes good time. Going northbound back to NYC, he finds Sunday mornings to be the best time to travel (other than the crack of dawn :lmao:)

bas71873 thanks alot :thumbsup2 I will travel those routes or leave at the crack of dawn lol :cool1:

Please come back and let me know how your drive was(we will be leaving from Long Island) Also would love any tips you may have.Have a great time and heres hopeing traffic is not bad.:)
