Some coworkers and I had this discussion about retirement.

DH and I sacrificed a lot to get where we are and I am about to embark on a new career in a couple of years.

I do not plan to stop working.....ever.

Sure,an illness or injury may force me to stop.

It would have to be something pretty significant to make me stop.

Are you planning to stop working? Why?

I already retired. I was 52 at the time. I'd spent 30 years in the same job. It was a job I liked, but 30 years was enough. I figured there were a lot of other things I wanted to try during my life that would not be possible sitting at a desk. I have no regrets with my decision.

I guess I have retired, even though that makes me really sound old at 41! I would work again if I had to, but right now we are doing just fine.

DH, on the other hand, I think he would get bored being retired. He would have to do something to stay busy. My FIL is the same way. He retired about five years ago from a great Federal job, and now he subs at a HS, and plays golf everyday and he is loving it too. I am sure DH will have to do something along these lines. Other wise, he is going to drive me nuts!:lmao:

I would never be able to retire. I am going to work until I die at my desk.

hi
it was retire early with add. money or work force lay off. took the money and ran. I got a couple of operations i been needing done and once i've recovered enough, i plan to go to school and start a whole new career.:beach:

As soon as I possibly can, (which I am nowhere year old enough yet). Too many other exciting things in the world to do besides spend all my time at work. Not to mention get out from underneath all that stress.

Retire- HECK YEA!!! I retire in 848 more days!! I can not imagine not retiring. Can wait to not have to get up 5 days a week and go to work! Its not like I will retire and sit at home- there are so many other things that I would like to do that do not include working until I die! I will take my pension and run as fast as I can away from my job the first day possible- I have enough time there to retire but not the age, you have to be 50 so as soon as I turn 50 I will leave a cloud of dust as I run to sign my retirement and pension papers!

There is an entire world to explore and we cannot see it all in 6 weeks of vacation a year (and we know that is a lot compared to most). Heck yes, we will retire to do that. Both kids should be through college by the time we are in our early 50s and we hope to retire then--unless my husband is still doing what he love and is travelling a lot then and I can not work and just tag along with him everywhere. Then he may keep it up a while longer--but only so long as it is more satisfying than frustrating.

In the last five years, all four of the "grands" retired.

One has golf and veterans organizations.
One is clearing fence rows and remodeling the master bath and organizing old family pictures.
One is bored, fretful and really needs a hobby.
One was slowly losing their mind & found a part time job cleaning offices. :lmao:

I plan to work until I'm physically unable to perform my job (I may cut back, but still do the job.). I can't imagine how I would fill my time without it.

Technically I am retired but I am looking for another line of work. I plan to fully retire in my 60's sometime. I will probably do a lot of volunteer work but I also plan to travel and golf, a lot. I couldn't imagine retiring without something to do though.

My DH will retire at 45 with a full pension. He wants to go someplace warm and work on a golf course ;) 6 months out of the year and travel. If we can live off of his pension and salary, I will retire as well.

Same here. No pension, I don't make enough money to support myself AND be able to contribute to a 401(k), and SS will be bankrupt/gone by the time I reach 65.

I'll be working until I die.

WOW, that is really early to be able to retire off a pension--good for him.:thumbsup2

I would love to go someplace warmer when I retire but that will have to wait--my daughter will still be in 8th grade when I retire so 4 years of high school after that! We are going to take off for 8 weeks and travel the US that first summer and then see what happens after that! I volunteer for a non profit so I will still be doing that when I retire.

I might change my mind when I get to that point; but right now I can't imagine retiring. I enjoy my job and I think I'd get bored with no kids at home and nothing to do all day. Yeah, in theory traveling sounds nice but the truth is DH isn't going to want to be gone all the time, my sister doesn't have the money, my kids won't have the time, and I don't want to travel alone. 6 weeks a year plus weekends is plenty of time to do the things I want to do especially since the kids will be gone and we'll have weekends free.

Of course I may change my mind once grandkids come along, especially if the kids move out of state (no, please, no).

I retired in 2008 at age 56 after 36 years with the same company to care for my husband who was dying of cancer. He died two months later. Of course, under the circumstances, retirement is not what I always hoped it would be. :sad1:

I'm so very sorry antmaril. :sad1:

I doubt it, but at some point I will have to because I will probably get to elderly to continue to withstand the rough commute and the high stress job I have. Not to mention, the money issue.

I work for the Federal Government. Believe me when I tell you that federal government employees who got in the government in the mid to late 80s and thereafter, do NOT have a cushy pension. I have a 401K like everyone else. I do get a small pension that will maybe amount to $20,000 per year when I retire (and that will be taxed as well as my 401K payouts).

Honestly, I just don't think I will have enough money to live out the rest of my life if I were to retire in my 60s. It will be interesting because my job is very busy, very stressful, and then there's the commute. I can't imagine doing it into my 70s.

But my mother, who is 67 is doing it as she is in the same boat as I am in.

I was thinking of going part time if the physical component became difficult, but not unless I had to.

I don't have hobbies, maybe that is the difference?

I also do not encounter many retirees who are enjoying retirement.
