Will we regret a spring break trip

Over the last 12 years we have gone to WDW during slow periods. When the kids were little it was the week of Labor day. We did one late April early May trip and thought it was too crowded but the kids were only 5, 3 and 5 months old and we didn't do many FP's. For the last many years we have gone over MLK week since I have a conference in Orlando then. It's a great time to go if the weather cooperates.
Now our oldest is starting high school and we can't take her out of school anymore. We are booked for a spring break trip but am wondering if we will be miserable. Is it wall to wall people and you can't even walk around or is it just crowded with high wait times if you don't use FP's? Would we be better off going in early June? Stupid school and sports schedules. They get in the way of Disney.

exactly when is your spring break? spring break season, as it varies that much from school to school, is march - may.

When is your Spring Break? If it's Easter week, then that's bad. Ours is usually mid-March, which is busy but not Easter busy. According to Touring Plans, we have hit crowd levels of 7-10 during that time, depending upon the park and year. I think early June will be way less busy than spring break at any time though. I have been surprised, after going at Spring Break and xmas-NYE, how low the crowd levels are for our early August trip.

It really depends when is YOUR Spring break. Ours is the first full week of March and usually crowds at WDW a low to moderate. In fact, that week is now our favourite time of the year to go.

We booked March 25-30. Easter is April 1 next year so we will be leaving the Friday before Easter.

We went (DW, DD, DD and DS) for a quick trip while in Florida for Spring Break this past March 14-16. It was one of the busier times we've been. By mid afternoon plan on 80-120 min wait times (or more) and heavy crowds. If you get to parks at rope drop crowds are pretty light until 10 am. Being there that early we were able to stay on rides for second go around. Granted this year was unseasonably cold in March. Thinking one morning was 32.

We've been the week prior to Easter to with our grandchildren who are 6 & 8 for the past two years and had a great time!

We went this past Spring break (mid March) - I didn't find the crowds bad at all, Epcot was terrific (F&G), and the weather was fantastic. In fact, we go every year at Spring break; much nicer than the summer months.

So, you will be there on Good Friday. A lot of people get that time off. Many schools tie their spring break to Easter, so a lot of them could be that week or the week after. It's going to be busy. Touring Plans is showing 7-10 resort wide during your days. That seems incredibly realistic. I'm not saying that you shouldn't go. We don't mind crowds. I would go to Epcot on New Years Eve in a heart beat again. However, if you don't want crowds, that's not a good time to go.

It will be busy but not New Years/Christmas busy. Spring breaks are spread out a bit more but it is still a time when kids have off school. Those times of year will naturally be busies at places that attract families with kids.

We went to WDW twice around the Easter holidays. DD had a high school softball tourament at the ESPN fields, so we didn't have a choice with the dates. In 2015 we were there the week after Easter. In 2017 we were there the week before Easter. I am not going to lie; it was super crowded - 9s and 10s across all the parks. But with good planning, we had a blast, sdid all we wanted to do and hardly waited in any lines. Here are my reviews of the two trips:

2015
I just got back last night and the trip went really well! Crowd levels on my three park days were 10 out of 10 (MK), 10 out of 10 (EP/HS) and 9/8 out of 10 (AK/HS)! I used the Touringplans.com Crowd Calendar (which underestimated the crowds at 7, 7, 5/5) and TP's touring plans. I had 3 day park hoppers. I made my FP+ reservations on Saturday for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. I got everything I wanted (including 7DMT) at close to the times I wanted. When we arrived on Monday, my roommate decided she wanted to tour with me, so I spent about 30 minutes getting FP+ for her too. I was able to get her FP+ for everything I had. I got overlapping times for all the rides except for 7DMT (she had to ride it a couple hours later than I rode it) and Mission Space (again I got her one for a couple hours later than mine).

ETA: I do not have a smart phone or ipad. I made all my selections 3 days ahead of my visit and my roommates selections 1 day before our first park on my computer. I did not attempt to change any FP+ in the parks. I did visit the FP+ kiosks to get a 4th FP+ in MK and to check 4th FP+ availability in Epcot.

Monday: After an overnight bus trip, we arrived, had a pool day, napped, and spent the evening at DTD. Had lunch at AS-S food court and dinner at the House of Blues inside bar.

Tuesday: We rope dropped MK at 6:55 AM. We walked on Space Mt, Buzz, Peter Pan, Little Mermaid, Small World, Haunted Mansion. Then I used my FP+ for 7DMT at 9:00, waited 30 minutes for Jungle Cruise at 9:15. Next we used FP+ for Splash, had a snack, then FP+ for Big Thunder. While my roommate used her FP+ for 7DMT, I went to Heritage House FP+ kiosk and got FP+ for 8:00 PM for Pirates of Caribbean. By this time it was 12:00 noon. We had lunch at Columbia Harbor House, left the park at 1:00 PM, went back to resort. It was so crowded by this time we could barely move!

We caught the bus from All Star Sports to ESPN complex for our daughters' 4:00 softball game. We had an hour long game delay due to rain. Once the game was over we booked it back to MK. The Hub was INSANE!!!! So many people! We rode Pirates, watched fireworks from the backside of the castle, had dinner at Pecos Bill's and staked out a planter box to sit on in Frontierland. We rested there and watched the Main Street Electrical Parade. Then we left. Didn't have to wait long for the bus and we got seats!

Wednesday: Daughters had an 8:00 AM softball game so rope drop was out. After the game and some shopping at the ESPN store, I ran over to Epcot for my 11:20 Mission Space FP+. My roommate was supposed to meet me over there but she fell asleep and missed all her FP times! Next, I used my FP+ for Test Track. **This was a critical strategy error on my part! In retrospect, I should have made my FP+ for Soarin' and done the Test Track single rider line. TT single rider line was a 20 minute wait. Soarin' was a 120 minute wait the entire time I was at Epcot. Needless to say, I did not ride Soarin' this trip.**

Then, I had a couple hours until my 2:00 FP+ for Spaceship Earth. I snacked and sipped my way around the World Showcase for lunch, enjoying all the special Flower & Garden topiaries, exhibits, food stands and entertainment. It was lovely! I saved all my Dining Plan snack credits just for the F&G food kiosks and it was worth it!!! Taco de Pastor & blueberry pomegranate margarita in Mexico, Kung Pao chicken bun in China, burnt ends brisket with hash in USA, seafood civiche in Morocco, La Vie en Rose Vodka slush in France, a Spa Water at Urban Farms...YUM!!! After I rode Spaceship Earth, I checked the FP+ kiosk for a random Soarin' opening. They didn't have Soarin', but they did have EO, Nemo, Turtle Talk and Imagination. I didn't feel like riding those. I went back to resort for a nap.

That evening I met the softball team at HS at 7:00 PM. While they waited for ToT, I went to One Man's Dream. I have never seen it and was glad I stopped in. Then we had dinner at Fairfax Faire (chicken & ribs) and watched the 10:00 Fantasmic. We had great seats in the middle section. The 8:30 show was standing room only at 7:45 and at capacity at 8:15. The 10:00 show still had one empty section when it started!

Thursday: We rope dropped AK; they opened the park at 7:45ish. We had no FP+ reservations at AK. We went straight to EE and rode twice, then we walked on Dinosaur. After that we walked on K. Safari. On our way there, we passed Kali River Rapids (a 10 minute wait), but we didn't want to get soaked so we skipped it. We took the train to Rafiki's Planet Watch/Conservation Station (something I'd never done), then watched Festival of the Lion King at 11:00 AM. We had lunch at the Yak & Yeti counter service place (very good!), then saw Tough to Be a Bug after a 20 minute wait.

At 1:00 we headed over to HS to use our FP+ reservations. We rode Star Tours with FP+. My roommate was recently discharged from the hospital. She had no issue riding rides, but after the first day, the walking did her in so she used a scooter. I got to see all the ins and outs of the scooter loading procedures. At Star Tours they had a snafu, forgot about us and started loading other scooter folks. After about 30 minutes my roomie finally said something (nicely of course) and they gave us a guest recovery FP which we used to ride Toy Story Mania. Then we used our last two prescheduled FP+s to ride RnRC and ToT. We got seated for the 5:30 Beauty and the Beast Show at 5:00. We finished HS with a drink at the Tune In Lounge at 50s Prime Time Café. We thought about seeing a couple more shows or riding the Great Movie Ride, but she was ready to call it a day.

At 7:00 ish, I caught the bus to Epcot where I met some other team parents in the World Showcase for dinner, drinks and Illuminations. I had the barbacoa tacos and a Dos XX from Mexico. We staked out a spot in front of Italy and relaxed until the show started. Afterwards, they headed to MK, but I went back to the resort. I was pooped!

Friday: Our team bus left at 8:00 AM.

All in all, I got all the FP+ rides I wanted at the times I wanted. And I felt like I got to see and do everything I wanted to do (except Soarin') with very little wait during one of the most crowded weeks of the year. It was a very successful trip!

2017
We just got back from our Easter Week trip last night. Overall, I would say it was a great trip. We went to WDW for DD's softball team's Disney High School Spring Training. The team, coaches, and a few parents stayed at Pop. Since we have to start paying for college in a couple of months, we stayed offsite at Vacation Village at Parkway. We could see the ESPN fields from our balcony - we were that close. We used 3 days on our 10 day no expire hoppers with waterpark fun tickets.

Between prebooked FPs and SDFP with our old magic bands from a previous onsite trip, we got a lot done over Easter Week when crowd levels were *10s at the parks.

Sunday 4/9: Arrival day...or should I say arrival night. The drive took 13 hours, so we didn't get in until 10:00 PM.

Monday 4/10 - We began with a relaxing breakfast at the Poly (Captain Cook's, sat outside on the terrace) followed by the pool at our resort, drinks with the other parents at Pop's Petals bar in the afternoon, dinner at The Boathouse in Disney Springs, then drinks and live music with the other parents at the House of Blues patio.

Tuesday 4/11: We started at AK. We got SDFPs at park opening for the morning for Kilimanjaro Safari and Dinosaur and an evening FP for Primeval Whirl. We had a PPO ROL Tusker House breakfast, rode EE at rope drop, and saw Flights of Wonder. We used our prebooked FPs at HS starting at 12:30 for TOT, RnR and Star Tours. We checked the kiosk for TSM when we were done, but those FPs were long gone. We did manage to see the 3D Muppet Movie after waiting about 20 minutes. We just missed the Indiana Jones Stunt Show; it filled to capacity just as we walked up. Every show was packed...every single seat filled with tons of people waiting in line. I have never seen the Muppet theater at capacity before. I also wanted to take DH on the Great Movie Ride. There were SDFPs available for it, but we literally ran out of time. We had to leave the park at 3:30 for a 4:00 softball game. Later we returned to AK for Primeval Whirl, dinner at Flame Tree and ROL.

Wednesday 4/12: We had a double header softball game in the morning, so we didn't get to Epcot until 12:30. We used our prebooked FPs for Soarin, Mission Space, and Spaceship Earth. We used single rider for TT (only a 25 minute wait at 1:30 PM). We did SDFP for Living with the Land and Nemo. You may think "Really...you needed a FP for Living with the Land and Nemo???" YES, we really did if we didn't want to wait in line for 60 minutes! Wait times mid day at all the parks were insanely long! We spent the late afternoon/early evening snacking around the World Showcase at the F&G food kiosks, then left at 6:00 to head to HS for Sci-Fi milkshakes & appetizers followed by Star Wars Galactic fireworks.

Thursday 4/13: We got to MK a little before 8:00 AM. We had prebooked FPs for 7DMT, Splash Mt and Big Thunder Mt. At park opening we rode Space Mt, Under the Sea, Small World, and Haunted Mansion. We tried Peter Pan right after Space MT but the wait was already at 40 minutes (too long for me, I did try SDFP but could only get 11:15 PM - too late, so we skipped it this trip). I got SDFP that morning for Pirates, Jungle Cruise and Buzz in the early afternoon & early evening. After we finished with all our FPs, I booked 4th FPs for Pooh and Dumbo. In between FPs, we had an 11:50 lunch at BOG, did Country Bears Jamboree, Carousel of Progress, Tiki Room, Incredibles Dance Party, Monster's Inc Laugh Floor, dinner at Cosmic Ray's and Wishes. We also left the park at around 3:00 for naps and came back at 6:00 PM. By 10:45 we were ready to head back to our condo. We got a Mickey bar and a Dole Whip float for the walk to the parking trams.

We did all this without a smart phone or the app, just used the FP+ kiosks. I do want to have a smart phone for our next visit because it would be easier to change things once I have the SDFPs booked. We met a dad at Epcot who was able to get a 4:30 FEA for his family that afternoon by stalking it on the app! I felt like we did the best at MK and the worst at HS. HS is just so small now with not many offerings to disperse the crowds. BUT we got a lot done on our 3 park days and didn't wait longer that 25 minutes (for TT) over Easter Week when crowd levels were *10s! Success!!!!

*Crowd levels:
4/11: AK - 10 out of 10, HS - 9 out of 10

4/12: EP - 10 out of 10, HS - 10 out of 10

4/13: MK - 10 out of 10

We booked March 25-30. Easter is April 1 next year so we will be leaving the Friday before Easter.

The 2 weeks surrounding Easter(week before & week after) are the busiest times for the spring break season. It will be crazy busy - maybe not quite Christmas/New Year busy but definitely crowded. If I had to choose between this week in March or early June - the pick would definitely be early June.

We have been the week before and the week after. If you are theme park all day people, I'd avoid Easter/Spring Break. The parks are horrible in the afternoon and evening. We go at rope drop for a few hours and head back to the resort after lunch most days...then relax by the pool all afternoon. We never plan to stay in the parks all day. We have loved our spring break trips. It is just important to have different expectations.

I think it's all just shades of grey. IMHO April/Spring Break/Easter is only going to be different than June in small, subtle ways - not major, fundamental needle movers for the overall experience. Both are crowded, but nothing a good plan, utilizing mornings, and modest expectations can't overcome.

That being said, I'd probably opt for June if this were us. After the last week of October, I rate our first week of April trip from last month about the most crowded/busiest we've experienced. But again, it's not like it's night/day from other times, just small things.

FWIW, April/Easter is one of the most expensive times to go with among the highest rack rates of the year. June feels cheap relatively speaking, at least for the Deluxes.

Have fun!

I'd rather have a crowded week at Disney than none at all! Pick the right parks, mix in a resort day and some DS time and you should be good to go!

I've been over spring break (which for us is always just before or after Easter) several times - including this year and last year. It's really a good bit dependent on your expectations. The weather can be gorgeous but the lines are long - not just the lines for rides but the stores are crowded and the line to get food at QS places is absolutely crazy. I prefer to book TS meals just to not have to deal with the craziness - or eat at less busy times. We also go every summer around the 4th of July (due to a conference we attend annually that's always held at that time) and I find the parks a good bit less busy then compared to spring break. I think you may find a bit lower crowds in June - but the weather is likely to be massively hot - hot hot hot. I wouldn't hesitate to go to WDW any time of the year but just plan to do less - or maybe different things - if you go during spring break - plan for the worst and hopefully you'd be pleasantly surprised!

Thanks for all the replies. I hate crowds and get annoyed even in January where some lines are close to walk on but there are lots of people in the parks. We may need to rethink things...

How do you feel about heat? I'm a teacher, so we can only ever go during school breaks. We really enjoyed our June trip back in 2010, and are planning another June trip in 2018. The crowds are very manageable (to us, but we are DLR vets who are very used to high crowds), but the weather can be horrific.
