Will Tiffins survive?

Tiffin is completely unappealing to me. The food doesn't seem to warrant the price and the interior design looks cheap and uninspired, definitely not what I associate with tiffin in 19th century British India. To me it seems they threw this place together because they needed a cash cow for ROL packages. Granted, this opinion is only from viewing pictures of the place, but pictures are what draw me into any any wdw restaurant. If the atmosphere doesn't seem to be there, I'm just not interested. For the money, I'd rather leave and go dine at one of the TS restaurants at AKL. I think perhaps others would agree with at least some of this assessment, otherwise the place would be hopping.
I'm not sure how the quality can be judged from pictures in reviews. I don't believe they were aiming for 19th century British India but more like a western club decorated with exotic art work.

In any event, I've only been in a handful of signature restaurants, and other than King Stefan's (if that counts), none of them have notable decor. HBD has a very pleasant airiness, and might convey aspects of the original, but unless you're familiar with the original and it's a superb job, I don't see anything enticing about it. I don't remember anything about Artist's Point, other than being unimpressed, suggesting there's nothing about it worth remembering. California Grille is dominated by the view, but it's not much value if you're not sitting near the window. The lounge (or maybe it was the sushi bar) struck me as more exciting decor.

And that's as it should be. When you're paying those prices, the focus should be on the food, particularly in the park. Few restaurants can do both. San Angel Inn has potential, but they'd have to up the menu and scale back the number of tables, something that's probably impossible for Mexican cuisine at WDW. Blue Bayou at DLR is the only Disney restaurant I can think of that pulls off the combination of atmosphere and quality, or at least it did when I was there ten years ago.

I do have to say that all of us in our group thought the space and decor were beautiful. The seating and tables were top notch. Not quite the new Flying Fish but close

We do not use the dining plan. Years ago we used to plan our trips around the excellent food onDisney property. In recent years, with the rise in prices and decline in quality, we hesitate to try new Disney-backed restaurants so are taking a "wait and see" attitude with Tiffins. We're finding dome better value for our dollar off property and also at non-Disney owned places at "Downtown Disney Springs" (it's our compromise to the multitude of historical Disney name changes !). Haven't heard too many Tiffins customers mentioning quality and value yet. Am I misunderstanding?

We felt quality was very good.
Value...hmmm...tougher one. Even though it was lunch, it was still very expensive. Weighing price vs enjoyment I think the value was on the medium level.

Tiffins!!!! Loved it! yes the decor was relativel plain but i loved the idea of 3 dining rooms. Definitely took away the look of a large
dining hall. The food was outstanding and the service excellent. Loved the outside area for a drink (drinks were good too) It was nice to be in a NICE upscale restaurant as the Animal Kingdom had been sadly lacking and this place is super. will be sure to go back again.

We ate there two nights ago and thought it was one of the best meals we've ever had on property. The halibut was perfectly cooked and loved the sides they chose. My partner had the Waygu strip and it was perfectly done as well. We did the octopus and bread service to start and thought both were great. The quality of food was very impressive for a theme park and I really hope they survive and the menu doesn't get dumbed down!

Nomad lounge was also really great. I love that Disney is adding more lounge/adult beverage options. This past trip was just the two of us and being able to sit and have a few cocktail before dinner and cool down after the 120 degree Florida heat is fantastic. (we broke our rule of no Orlando between April October :duck:) If anyone like off the beaten path beer, try their Kungaloosh Spiced Excursion Ale. It was fantastic!

We ate at Tiffins last Sunday and it was wonderful. We both had the Waygu beef, which was perfectly cooked and delicious, but I was most impressed by the iced tea, oddly enough. Fresh brewed from loose leaf vanilla passionfruit tea and they give you a little cup of vanilla simple syrup to sweeten it to taste. It was fantastic.
The desserts were small, but I was so full from the meal and had the free DDP so I really didn't care (If I had paid $9 for that little thing I might've been upset). I had the sorbets, which were very good.

We at at Tiffin's on our trip a few weeks ago and I was a little underwhelmed. There was really nothing wrong with it at all, the food was good (I had wagyu steak) but not amazing, as I was expecting it to be. The service was just okay, but that may have just been bad luck of the draw. Again, it wasn't anything lacking, just not what I expect out of a signature restaurant.

I think it's ability to survive is going to depend entirely on whether or not AK turns into a truly night time park. They aren't there yet, but perhaps once RoL is ready and once Pandora opens, things will change. I would like to see it survive because it does offer a dining option that just isn't close to anything else they have in that park.

Tiffins is beautiful. The lunch special is a good value and the food was pretty good. But as far as I'm concerned, the biggest star is the Nomad Lounge.

I hope it does survive! It was one of the very best meals I had on my last trip

I agree...it was the best in park dining we've had to date. I really think it will pick up over time. It's just in a bad area right now.

When Pandora opens there will be a lot of traffic through that area. Things may pick up. Or because of the prices and perceived "exotic" food, it may not. Needs time to work out.

I also really enjoyed Nomad Lounge, to the point where, I'll send DH out to his fav. rides, and I'll stay on the verandah sipping through my own cocktail jungle cruise! Best of both worlds for us!

I think the beauty of the decor in Tiffin's is that it isn't obvious how much of a storytelling-museum it is. There are many artifacts from Disney history as well as other pieces that tell multiple stories. Quite literally when it comes to the plaques adjacent to the art. We found the best introduction was through our server and the hostess, who showed us various pieces and told us the history behind them. We were delighted to hear the background/history of the restaurant decor. (It reminds me of the servers at Antoine's in the French Quarter @ New Orleans. When availability allows, the server will show you through the restaurant going the history behind the various dining rooms.)

We greatly enjoyed the Octopus, because DH and I discovered how the texture and taste is vastly improved when prepared by an expert. For example, instead of tough rubbery texture, it was firm while easily cuttable with a fork, akin to butter. The flavor was also complex, which offered a smoothness alongside the marinade seasoning and touch of charcoal-grill edge.

We hope it's around next year. If Rivers of Light is actually open, we'll do the dining package if it's offered like it was for Jungle Book. We found it a great value for our palettes and wallets. :cutie:

We ate at Tiffin's on Saturday 9/17 and it was excellent.
Best Beef my DH ever ate, he said it was so tender.
I had the Halibut and it was delicious with the Forbidden Rice and Sauce, I left nothing on my plate.
I really enjoyed the decor of this restaurant, it was not tacky but beautifully done, and was perfect for a Signature restaurant.
Most all of the tables were filled with Guest when we were there.
Plus the Bar/Lounge was filled.

It's good to see that so many good reviews. I think I'll stop by Nomad on my upcoming trip.

I don't find the menu for either Tiffins or the new Flying Fish appealing. I think the wording could be improved. What is "zhough" or "crudo"? On the FF menu, they list "dehydrated milk foam" in a dessert. Does that sound like anything you want to put in your mouth? They need to find a better menu writer.

We had a dinner reservation, but were hungry early and were easily accommodated for the lunch menu. In fact, the place was nearly empty. We did all choose from the special lunch menu and enjoyed our meals very much. We tried a variety of things and all were tasty. But there is a lot going against this restaurant right now. As mentioned, ROL hasn't come to life, along wth the meal packages that will probably support Tiffins; and it's kind of hard to find, tucked away by the future Pandora. And the regular menu is really quite expensive -- and may not necessarily be worth it.

We enjoyed the decor and our lunch at the Jungle Cruise Canteen more than Tiffins. There is more visual eye candy there. I had hoped for more from Tiffins, but still hope they work out the kinks, because it's great to have a fine dining option with an adventurous menu in DAK.

This is a great post. I like your descriptions of the artwork and food (octopus). And I'm LOLing at the bolder part. A personal "cocktail jungle cruise" is something I want during my trip. :rotfl:

Another thing (besides publishing unappetizing menus) that irks me about Disney menus is going "all day." A dinner at a newer restaurant like Tiffins is a lot of money. A less expensive lunch menu would give you a chance to try the food and see if it's for you.

I didn't like the way that the food was seasoned at Boma or the F&W Africa kiosk. Tiffins could be the same way; I'd have to try it before I would want to spend as much as a dinner costs. It's just too expensive to try on blind faith.

It's rather unfair to review a restaurant you've only experienced via pictures, no?

They may have named it Tiffin but it has nothing to do with British India and they didn't try to make it that way. If you happen to go they will explain the decor and the reasons they have what they do and where it came from. It's wonderfully done and I'm not sure how you can judge it based on photos alone. It's not thrown together and there was a lot of thought put in to it.

We've been many times since it opened. Every time we go there are more and more guests there. I think it's popular once people hear about it and try it. It's rare to find someone who hates it. Of course there are some who to, there isn't a place on property that everyone likes, nor is there one that everyone hates. But of the folks who try it you'll find it is very well received. It's slow to take off in large part due to it's location off the beaten path.
