I'm a brand new DVC owner, and getting ready to make my first reservation.
The problem is I'm not concrete on the dates we will be going, trying to cordinate school and word schedules. I was hoping to book with a couple of extra days, then, when schedule confirmed, cancel the days I won't need.
Will this be a problem?
What if it exceeds my points available?:confused3
Any suggestions from the veterans would be appreciated.:worship:

If you don't have the points, you can't make a reservation. You can only book as many days as you have points available.

If you cancel less than 31 days from the beginning of the reservation, those points go into holding and you can only use them 60 days ahead of time (until they expire - no banking these). If you borrow points from next year, you can't unborrow them.

If there is a waiting list, they might not let you just cancel a few days here and there.

Get your schedule straight before you book.

If you use more points than are in your current use year, you will have to borrow from your next use year. If you do that, the points can not be returned to their original use year, but must be used in the year they were borrowed into. HOpe that makes sense.

Yes, you can book more days than you actualy will need, limited only by the number of points you have available in your current UY or by borrowing. Note that if you borrow, those points cannot be returned to the original UY and should be used for the nights remaining in your reservation when it is finalized.

I don't think that others being on a waitlist limits your ability to cancel a day or 2 at the beginning or end of your vacation.

And, as noted above, you want to finalize your reservation more than 30 days out to avoid having points for cancelled nights go into holding.

We always book our desired vacation nights as soon as we can, but our schedule invariably ends up shifting a little when we book our flights. We just cancelled a day at the end of our planned April vacation, booked a new day at the begining, then added on points so we could book one more day. Except for the need to add-on, it was no problem at all.

Best of luck-- Suzanne

If it causes you to lose points it's not a good idea.
