Will this stop you from shopping Walmart?

I can see why as a business they would stop. Some businesses can ignore controversy, others can't. A lot of Wal-Marts are in small towns where a church boycott could mean a bankrupt store. Even Disney is quiet about it's support of gay organizations in the community.

At least Wal-Mart refused to bend when people protested that they were carrying "Brokeback Mountain." It's maybe not the best direction a company could go in, but at least they aren't completely shunning the many gay employees as well.

It wouldn't bother me if Walmart never donated at all. But to donate, and then stop donating because of protests, well, that just doesn't sit well with me.

I don't shop there anyways, EVER, there are two within 5 minutes of me, but I have never stepped foot in the stores.

I guess another take off question, how many people here refuse to support EXXON Mobil?

I would be lying to say that I'll never shop there - sometimes it's just too darn convenient. But now I will find an alternative whenever possible. Thanks for posting this - I will write my local store and the corporate office to express my disapproval.

I do not shop there. I have not set foot in one for about 4 or 5 years. Its more of a thing about buying locally for me. I see how Wal-Mart shuts down local factories when they place such high orders one year and next year demand a lower price. Then when the factory cannot meet the lower price they go elsewhere. By that time it’s to late and the factory ignored all of its other clients. It also irks me about how much more space they just devoted to swimming pool stuff :furious: (ok irk is much to easy a word, it infuriates me)

But I am one of those people who are extremely loyal to were I shop. I still do not go to JC Penny’s I will never buy a crysler ect ect

For many rural communities, we now have little choice. The locally owned stores could not complete with Wal-Mart, they are closed...the distribution chain to even open a smaller competitor no longer exists...big distributors don't want to deal with small local retailers...they want super stores, and in our neck of the woods, Wal-mart is it. K-Mart and Kroger even cloed their stores in Central Texas. There are still a few Targets here and there, but none in our town.

Walmart is definitely the big store around here. NOT a fan but sadly, do shop there sometimes. I feel uneasy about it. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich.

I've always hated Walmart, but now I like them even less. (is that possible?) Conservative Christians "pressure" them and they refuse to stand their ground? Obviously they were only donating in the first place as a publicity ploy...a*holes!

Yeah, I hear you. I live in a small town in Central Texas, as well, where Wal-Mart is not only the provider of all electronics, health & beauty supplies, craft supplies, etc, but is only one of two grocery stores in town. I'm about 30 - 45 minutes away from the city in both directions. And believe me, I despise going to Wal-Mart, but sometimes it's the only option, unfortunately.

Glad I have a choice, I rarely went before due to horrible customer service but now I won't be going at all...

I am like some of the others here. If I had a choice I would not shop at Walmart, but I live in a small town with two of them, one is close to my home. I hate going to them, but they are the cheapest in town for food and supplies, plus the closest, with the others being at least 20 min driving time from my house. We have begged for a Target, someone in town is keeping that from happening.

Yes, Wal- Mart is just another big, horrific corporate entity - until you realize that in many cases they:

  • Provide entry-level employment opportunities in depressed areas to those who need them the most.
  • Bring in basic goods at affordable prices in places that historically lacked them.

Bottom line: yes, mass scale "big box" efficiency is bland and impersonal, but Americans are voting for it with their pocketbooks and aren't looking back. Those attacking it (ergo, promoting "village economies") want to drag us all back to a mythical, lost era where the world was happily served by corner drugstores and five and dimes.

I don't shop at Wal-mart do to their ethics. But in reality, the people who claim they would boycott would have nowhere else to shop as Wal-mart pretty much put all the smaller stores out of business, in the smaller towns.

We very rarely visit Wal-Mart and definitely prefer Target. Since Target is expanding their growth (new stores) in the U.S., hopefully those who have few options will have a Target in the near future.
