Will they let one spouse check in hotel if other spouse has benefits?

Disney travel related somewhat, but definitely budget related.

DFIL is having surgery on the Thursday before we leave for WDW (we leave early Saturday morning). The operation is in Knoxville, four hours south of us and on the way. DH wants to leave very early Saturday morning and get to the hospital well before dawn. Granted, DFIL is a very early riser, but I think a 4 AM hospital visit is too early.

I want DH to drive down Friday morning and spend the day with his father. He'd drive the car that will eventually take the four of us to WDW. DD25 DGD and I would drive down after work, arriving at our hotel around 9:30. We four would stay overnight at the hotel; leaving about 7 AM. We'd leave DD's car at the motel (airport motel with park, fly and drive, so no hassle there), and continue on to WDW.

I'm a government employee (unfortunately furloughed, but we have enough saved for our trip), and also a member of AARP. DH works for the private sector, and is not an AARP member. We can save about $5 on our room due to either being a government employee or an AARP member.

As mentioned, I won't arrive until 9:30; however DH would want to check in much earlier. Can DH check into the hotel room, then I come by several hours later with my AARP card or government ID?

BTW, DH can get Friday off, I can probably get Friday off (and depending on Congress, I may have it off), but DD will use up all her vacation and cannot get it off.

As always, many thanks.

Some places don't even ask for proof of membership, but there's no reason your DH couldn't show your AARP card. The hotel is not going to contact AARP. They're happy to have your business.

Why is your spouse not an AARP member? It doesn't cost extra to add the spouse, and no mention of age.

I hope all goes well with the surgery and the travel.:)

Most of the time I am not even asked to provide proof of Government or AAA when I check in a hotel.

AARP spouses should get their own card. Just call and get him one.

call the hotel. I've done this in the past and they've just had me show my i.d. or card when I arrived. if worse comes to worse, if the reservation is in your name, advise them that your dh is going to check in earlier than the remainder of the party and give him a photocopy of whichever item you will use to qualify for the discount (I don't know any places that allow double dipping-it's either the government discount OR aarp) to present at check in. you might want to make arrangements that the room is guaranteed with a credit card that has your dh's name on it (that shows he is tied to the reservation).

I've never had to show the AAA card when I checked in to get my AAA discount. I think in most cases, the hotel doesn't ask.

As stated before, get a AARP card for your DH.

I was actually at a hotel recently checking in next to someone with this issue. They worker said to just have the other person show the discount card when they arrived (oddly enough I wasn't asked for my AAA card). I got the impression that they would charge the full amount at check out if no one showed up with the card before then.

Thanks for the link. I did not know I could get a card for DH for free. I thought he needed his own membership He turned 50 a couple of years ago (I'm three years older than him).

Just got a card for him. Again thanks, not only for the link, but for the well wishes.

He actually could have gotten a card even though he wasn't 50 as long as you were 50. As soon as my husband turned 50, I signed up. I'm 3 years younger than him, but that doesn't matter. As long as one is 50, you're good.

I'm like the others, in all my years of traveling (and I used to travel a LOT) on business, I've only been asked once for proof (and I used AAA, AARP, and gov't rate). Of course, I had the proof just in case.
