I am really bad with flying. Didn't used to be but last year I flew twice to FL. And was having severe anxity attacks. I won't even get into the terrible things that go through my mind when I fly. It was truly fightening. I have kids and I was trying to hold it together but it wasn't fun. We are going to Disney in May and I am already thinking of what I could do to overcome this problem. I have taken Xanex and tht doesn' twork for me all it does is make me sleepy. I am considering getting a therepist, but if anyone with a simalar problem has any tips I would appreciate it. I am determined not to let this stop me from traveling which is truly my passion in life besides my family

Wow... and here I thought I was the only one with this type of problem. I have the HARDEST time on airplanes as well; my DH and DD think it's airsickness but it's not! It's "we're going to all crash and die, including my daughter who is my whole life" sickness. I know it's a purely mental thing, but nothing I have done so far has helped. Haven't tried therapy, mainly because I can't afford it, but who knows? Maybe that will help you!

Good luck :)

Talk to your doctor...I know alot of people are prescribed valium for fear of flying...

You will be fine! :)

Therepy may help. good luck.

I am the same way. I even find that I am not enjoying my time on vacation as much because the anxiety about the flight home keeps intruding. What seems to help me the most is to keep my mind occupied. I do crossword puzzles or Sudoku puzzles or read books with complex plotlines. Watching the movie on the flight doesn't seem to work - my mind can still wander! If I am flying with my grandchildren, I'll try to get involved in playing a game with them or I tell them stories, making up the story as we go along (again, keeping my brain busy thinking up new elements of the story so that it can't drift into scary "what if" scenarios). Also, I try very hard to get an aisle seat and try to pretend to myself that I am riding on a bus.

That is exactly it. Morbid thoughts. I hate it but that is exactly the thoughts that run through my head too. I am willing to do whatever I need to though I hate the fact of being restricted on what I do becauseof a phobia.

I agree talk to your doctor. He should be able to give you something that works that will calm you down.

I live Indiana also, and I won't fly. When I go to WDW I drive :drive: . It takes 12-13 hrs and isn't as safe. I think about it like this. If I die in a car wreck, It's pretty much instant. If you die in a plane crash you have about 3-5 seconds to think :scared1: about it or how ever long it takes to hit the ground. Also if my engine quites I can just pull over and call for help.

Not much help here since I love to fly, but do get abit anxious at take off and landing times. Ususally I am so busy with the kids I forget where I am....lol

I would talk to your dr. or call the local health clinic and talk to someone. Last time we flew (Nov. 2001, yes just 2 months after 9/11) the lady next to us was having a hard time, her 9 yr old daughter sat by her side talking to her the whole time, reminding her to slow her breathing, they are just fine. Soon though the daughter needed to use the potty but she didn't want to leave her mom so I said I would sit with her. The mom said she wished she could be as calm as me. I told her everyone is afraid of something. Me... Ladders.... Could not pay me enough to climb up on one! But hey, I have been cliff jumping before and leapt off a 125 footer....lol a bit of a daredevil, I am...

I would also let the flight attendants know a head of time, that's what this lady did and they kept checking on her, making sure she was doing ok.

Just remember, lots of people are afraid to fly, if I really think about what I am flying in (not just a plane but what the plane is made) it freaks me out a bit.

Good luck on your flights, get whatever help you need.
