I was wondering with all the nasty weather throughout the US will the kids still get all of their Spring Break? I figure it would be a good time to go this year if the weather shortens their vacation. I don't have a school age kid so thats why I was asking. I also don't wish that they have a shorten vacation. I was just curious.

If it remains cold... kids have to stay in school. :rotfl2:

Of course they get their spring break.

I am not sure I follow the question.

I just heard the other day someone saying (from the east coast) that they are shortening the spring breaks... so they don't have to make the snow days up at the end of the year. I know if it was my kids... i would rather shorten spring break rather than stay in school longer in June!

But we are going to Florida for spring break... but will not be at Disney the whole time. :sad2:

I understand your question - here in CT we have only had 1 snow day so far. Our school system has to get to at least 7 before they start taking away the April vacation. There has been a lot of snow this winter but it has stayed south of us so there really isn't much of chance that many schools in the northeast will be taking away spring break to make up the days.

Around here they rarely ever shorten the spring break because so many already have plans for that time period. And even if they did, Most families will still go wit hthe scheduled trip and just miss out on school.

I'm in VA, and so far we have had 7 snow days, and have about 20 inches outside now, so I am sure more days will be missed next week. I really wouldn't be surprised if they shortened spring break as well as cancelled some other teacher work days and holdiays this year. BUT, I also would imagine that many people would still take any vacations that they had planned (unless they were a teacher and couldn't). I know I would!

My school district had their Spring Break taken as of last week because we have missed 21 days thus far. We had everything taken. Good Friday, Memorial Day you name it it's officially gone. Even Professional Development days were moved to Saturday's so as not to miss school.
The area I live in is very prone to flooding as well as snow. We also missed 3 days with the flu back in October. It's just been unbelievable trying to get the school days in.

If our schools ever have to make up days, it's tacked on to the end of the school year. They never take the spring break.

Our home town always used days at Easter or other breaks to make up lost time due to bad weather and school closings.
They build a certain number of days into the calendar -- kids go longer now in the summer and start earlier than they did years ago, so I don't know how many will be needed to make up the official school year.

I teach in Georgia. We can miss four days before having to make up days. We have only missed two so far in my system. We have built in inclement weather days if we don't have to cancel school
due to weather the kids get free days off.

Same here, our school district has 4 extra days built in. So we have to be out at least 5 before we have to make up days (which is unlikely to happen). I think we average maybe 1-2 snow days a year.

Even if they shorten spring break, many will still take their kids and go because they already have made the plans, paid for plane tickets, etc. by the time scholl decide what they are going to do, the vacation has been paid for and often not refundable. So happy to almost be done with all that...we had Saturday school today to make up for a lost day earlier this week.

Most of us here in NY (can't really say about other area's) have a set number of "weather days" allocated in our school calendar. For our district, it is 3. If we use less than 3 days for snow days, then we get 3 days off added in the spring. If we use 3 days, then our calendar stays as is. If we use MORE than 3 snow days, the we have to make those days up by having school on days that were originally designated for breaks. For our school, spring break is March 29, 30, 31, and April 1 and 2. If we use extra snow days, we have school on march 29, then 30, and then 31 if necessary. So, if we used 6 snow days instead of the 3 that are allotted, we wind up only having a four day weekend for spring break instead of a full week.

What I think the Op's is asking is, with the bad weather around the country, and the closing of school's, once the aloment of days used for snow days is used up, will the kids be required to attend classes over spring break to make up the lost days. It is possible, but more likely, they would just add days to the end of the school year. This would have the possibility of messing up the start of summer break and the start of families vacations.

I live in NC and we have a few days built in. The school system I work for has missed 3 days so far and will have two teacher workdays change over to regular school days. Don't know how they will make up the other day yet.

DS's school has missed 4 days. They will lose President's Day and two days from Spring Break(already on the calendar as inclement weather days). I don't know where the last one will come from.

In NC, it is state law that schools have to dismiss on or before June 10. Most end ON that date, so we cannot add days to the end.

One of my pet peeves. Makes no sense to me that NC does things the way they do. I don't think we've every had a year where the kids didn't have to make up days on weekends, spring break or something else silly. My wife even had to teach on Memorial day last year, something I consider an insult as a vet.

We're at the point where any more missed days could threaten spring break. If that happens, my kids will miss school. I consider it the school's screw up.

Same here in Mich.... never take away the spring break , just tack on days in June. Most schools in our area have about "act of God" days planned in so you'd have to miss more than a week to have days added on the year.

When I was in school (mid 1960s-late 70s) any snow days (or our extended Christmas break of 1974 due to the "energy crisis") were made up during spring break. By the time my kids went to school spring break was considered sacrosanct and they made up the days by adding them in June.

Way back when it was somewhat unheard of for a family to take an out of state vacation during spring break.

We've already lost one day of spring break here in Raleigh and if we miss any more days they will come out of spring break too.
My neighbor teaches at a year round school and there is no time when all the kids are out to do make-up days, so she will have 3 days of school on Saturdays. :scared1:
Last year, spring break here was only Thursday and Friday! :scared1: As a teacher, I can say both teachers and students need that week to have a mental break!
I grew up in Michigan and they just built extra days into the calendar - can't figure out why they don't do that down here. (But loved getting a snow day Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday for 4 inches of snow that fell on Friday!:rotfl2:)
