Will Resort Tastes Change Over the Next Few Decades?

I am a creature of habit, I have the same husband for 38 years, lived in the same house so when I say I fell in love with the BWV in 1998 I meant for life ....at least mine. Don't get me wrong I love something about all the DVC resorts just love BWV above all else and don't see that changing if my life is any indication. I only wish I would be around to enjoy all 38 remaining years but at 54 its not likely.

I have only been a DVC member for a couple of years. I have a 7 yo DS. I am 45, and my DH is 46.

When we were deciding on a home resort (we bought resale), we were considering all the resorts. But I asked this board - which would be harder to get at the 7 month window - 4th of July at Hilton Head - or Christmas at OKW. I was told the 4th of July at Hilton Head. I was thinking of the future at the time. A time when my DS would not want to go the Disney World every year. (I am cringing at the thought!!) So we bought at HH.

But then we added on at BWV. Just returned from our first trip to both. And I think we made great decisions. Janis

When we purchased our first contact, we didn't know about these boards so we didn't worry about "buying where we most want to stay", and ended up just buying what Disney was selling at the time. After experiencing all of the WDW DVC resorts over the last 3 years, it turns out that we (although didn't know it at the time) did in fact "buy where we most wanted to stay, as our home resort is definitely our favorite. This is based on the ambience, activities, and amenities of the resort itself, not for location or convenience of little ones, so I would expect we will be just as content there in 20 years as we are now. But 20 years is a long time ( for me anyway ) and who can say what will seem like a good idea then.

As people go through life stages - single, married no kids, kids, teens, empty-nesters, grandkids, etc. - won't their needs and desires in DVC Resorts change, rendering somewhat moot the concern about who wants to stay where? Plus, isn't is possible (yes, this is Disney heresy, I know) that in 20 years, you'll get tired of what is now your 'favorite' park, and you'll want easier access to another?

Dr T.....very nice topic! I think I've seen you hinting at this in some responses as you think that people may "drift" towards SSR and other places in the future as their vacation needs/wants change.


Your comment about home resort choice becoming moot could well be true in some circumstances. However, I don't believe it will for us.

For us, DVC is an extension of the emotional tie we have with WDW. We knew we wanted to go for the long term, and we wanted to stay on-site. The DVC home resorts we chose have an emotional tie all their own.

So even if our vacation needs change at WDW, we will always be looking forward to our "homes" which have already built such great memories and feelings.

I guess we don't stay someplace for convenience...we stay for the experience of the place. I don't see our ties to our "homes" changing even if our vacation agendas do.

IMHO

I DO think resort taste will change over time. My opinion is that after many trips to WDW park proximity will become less important on a regular basis. Except for a few diehards, I think people will become less interested in visiting parks over and over.

Visits to Orlando, off property restaurants and just plain relaxing away from the crowds will be more important. So will parking by the door and enough space to bring along the grandkids and friends not seen in a long time. Actually, for a lot of people this is more important even now.

Sure, there will be times everyone will want to stay close to the parks, but not every visit.


HOWEVER, I don't think this should necessarily affect choice of resort for a purchase. If you THINK you're gonna want to stay at a given resort most of the time in the foreseeable future, then buy there!! Don't try to anticipate the unknown.

We have a small contract at BCV. We did factor in the pool as a large part of our decision, we have 4 kids, but DH and I would also enjoy staying there by ourselves just to stroll into EPCOT at will. We will be staying at OKW in October and can't wait!!!! This new deal at SSR looks good, and a DVC on the monorail would be very tempting. I guess I agree with Doc, I think we would enjoy any of the resorts, and as the kids get older and DH and I are more flexible we should be able to enjoy all of them more easily.

My tastes have changed regarding WDW but not my home resort, OKW. WDW has also changed over the years to a more thrill ride amusement park which does not "thrill" me. At any rate there is always something to do around the Orlando area nd the different resorts offergreat restaurants.
