Will pools be open for May Alaskan cruises? Will they be crowded?

We're going on an Alaskan cruise in May and are concerned that they might close the pools because it will be "too cold". (As Canadians, the expected temperatures seem downright balmy to us). One of the things we're looking forward too the most is using the pools. Can anyone confirm whether or not they will be open? If they are open, do you think they will be crowded? I'm not sure how many people consider "swimming" to be part of an Alaskan vacation.

Well I can;t see them closing them, but you never know, and I wouldnt expect them to be crowded. Though I wouldnt be surpraised if the hot tubs are packed full most of the time.

They should definately be open as the pools are heated. We are also on an Alaska sailing next month and I guarantee my kids will be swimming also. I am hoping the weather will detour some folks and the pools won't be too crowded... Time will tell....

I went to Alaska in May and the weather was different in each port. Juneau HOT, Ketchican rainy but neither cold or hot, Skagway windy and cold.

I plan on bringing my swimsuit and spending time in the pool....hey DCL how about providing some nice fluffily, warm robes for everyone when they leave the pool!!!

My biggest "concern" if you want to call it that....is not getting IN the pool, but getting OUT of the pool!!

We went on an Alaskan cruise in mid may about 5 years ago. We spent very little time on deck. It was very cold and they were even serving hot chocolate! (this was Holland Am.) We took mugs of it out on deck.

The pools on the Wonder were heated and warmed to 82 degrees during our MR cruise on 3/27. The temps are even listed on the Report from the Bridge channel.

I have cruised to Alaska twice on RCCL-early July over the 4th and late July into early August. We had some warm days in port but nothing hot. I think May will be kinda chilly.

RCCL has an indoor pool in a heated solarium. I believe the solarium roof retracted but I don't remember it ever being open. We swam every morning and then had coffee and rolls poolside-the sun was warm through the solarium roof so we had a nice greenhouse effect. It was chilly outside-you are on some icy water and there is a breeze. The Wonder's pools are nicely heated so I would imagine there will be swimmers or people in the water but not like a warm water destination with alot of swimsuit sunbathers sipping cocktails and sunning. I would think if it is warm there will be more people sitting in the chairs with jeans and sweatshirts sipping a warm drink or soaking in the hot tub up to their chins. I always had a sweatshirt or wool sweater on when I was on the deck watching the scenery go by (also had my gloves on when outside as the breeze is very brisk-not balmy.

Have fun-it is a wonderful trip but totally different than a warm destination cruise. I am from the upper Midwest and live a couple hundred miles from the Canadian border so I understand about weather feeling balmy when others think it is cold.

We cruised Princess to Alaska in May. The weather was def cool on some days. The deck chairs had lap blankets on them and there were robes in each cabin.
Perhaps DCL will follow suit in the climate?
The pools and multiple hot tubs were all open but not heavily used - as you can imagine. We wore our robes down to the hot tub every night at 10-11pm to watch the sun set.
It's not at all like a caribbean cruise - for one thing you can see land almost all the time! And standing and watching the incredible majestic coastline, glacier chunks of ice, with Humpback whales in the water below while holding a mug of steamy something can never be replicated!!

Just off the Wonder and this question was asked to one of the higher upper people onboard. The pools will be open. Some renovations have been made for additional heaters. I didn't hear much beyond that.

We cruised with Princess to Alaska in May 2007. We swam in the outdoor pool quite a bit, as did a few other people. When you are in port and the winds are calm is the best time to swim. It's all a personal preference though and what your cold tolerances are for when you get OUT of the pool. Most kids will be fine.

I am pretty sure the May Alaskans will be pretty quiet too...the May 3rd one has staterooms still available in almost every category!! Good for us since we are on that cruise!! DH and I will definitely swim...no matter the temp!! Now if I could only get a brunch and tea ressie!!

We did a 2 night repo in May and it was too chilly to swim, but one of my best memories was 10:30pm, sitting in the hottub with my daughter and one of the 'drink guys' brought 2 hot chocolates to us 'on the house' because we were the only people on the deck. We sat looking at the stars drinking hot choc in a hot tub - didn't get much better than that!

I hope DCL puts on nighttime movies on the deck, as I would totally snuggle up in a blanket with hot choc and watch one!

I would say to expect that on the day spent cruising Tracey Arm, it will be really chilly on deck. The air & water temperature around the glaciers can be pretty darn cold!
