Will my pins be safe in my luggage?

I bought about 75-100 pins from ebay for myself and DD11 to trade in the parks. I currently have them packed in two ziplocs in the zippered sock compartment in my luggage. I am concerned that these may be stolen. Am I being over cautious?

The fact that they are a wad of metal may trigger a security search, but I doubt they would be stolen. If you plan on wearing them on a sash, make sure they are secure. My kids lost several last year because the backs would come off and then the pin would eventually fall off. Just do a pin check every so often.

I would put them in your carry-on, I would not check them. Don't put anything valuable in checked luggage, especially since you are not supposed to lock it.

My luggage was opened and searched last trip. When unpacking at home, I couldn't find my Disney pins. I was in complete panic and was sure they had been stolen. I actually called and had claims forms sent to me. I later found them stuck inside a pair of sweatpants. Definitely not where I had put them, but I was so happy to find them. I am not a pin trader...just have a few as souveniers and for the memories. I was devastated when I thought my 8-10 pins were missing. If you have 75-100 pins, I'd definitely see if taking them all in your carry-on was ok.

I have never had a problem with my pins in my checked luggage. I check them so I won't have a problem getting through security.
I use cable ties to lock my suitcases, so I am not overly concerned about them getting stolen, and if my bag is checked, they can easily snip the cable tie. I keep extra ties inside the bag, so it can be re-locked after checking.

We kind of figured that it's not a good idea to put pins in our carryon. They have pointy metal backs. While I know that it's very unlikely that you would be able to hijack a plane with a pin back, you might get a slightly overzealous security agent. When they confiscate stuff at the security gate, you don't get it back.

I wouldn't check them, cause I'm sure you paid a decent amount for them. However, I would check with someone in security prior to carrying them on, just to make sure they will allow you to take them on. Call ahead and pose the question.

Ive traveled with my pins (usually 20-30) through SLC,LAX,MCO and SNA and never had trouble with them through security- I keep them easy to access and in their own container ie ziploc so I can easily pull them out for inspection. Once they see they are pins (the one time they asked) I was waived through without a second glance.

I definetly would travel with them carryon. Mine are very special for me and I wouldnt want to take the risk.

I usually carry my pins on without any problems....

I went down in May with a friend who is a big pin collector. She had a backpack filled with pins that she carried on. No problem bringing them on, but she did have to open everything up to be checked by security.
