Will Mission Space make me sick?

Okay, so I am going to Disney for the first time this September and I want to ride everything I can. My fear is that I will not be able to ride Mission Space without getting motion sickness.

I have never really had a lot of problems with motion sickness in the past, however I do get car sick if I read in the car on long car trips without taking some Dramamine first. If I take it, then I am fine. I used to work at Space Camp in Hsv, AL as a counselor and I would ride the G Force ride with my camp kids without getting sick. I know that G Force is similar to Mission Space but not nearly as bad.

I have never gotten sick at an amusement park, but about five years ago I got sick after going to the local fair. I had ridden many spinning rides (including the ferris wheel that the operator would not let us off of - that one really did me in) and my husband (then boyfriend) had to pull over to a gas station so I could get sick. After that incident, I have always taken Dramamine before I have gone to any amusement park and have ridden rides at Six Flags and King's Island just fine without any motion sickness.

I really want to try to ride the Orange Mission Space, but I would hate to go on it and get sick and then it ruin the rest of my day. Based on the information I have provided about myself, do you think I will be okay to ride it? I plan to take Dramamine everyday I am at the parks, just in case.

I think you will be fine. Your eyes will trick you into thinking you are not really spinning as long as you keep looking at the screen. This is quite different from the spinning at a carnival.

Just relax and enjoy the experience.

Try the green ride first and see what you think. Personally I think there's nothing to it!

I personally love this ride, I agree with the PP that said do the green side first, it has the enclosed space, but not the spinning. There has been MANY times I've come off the orange side and have seen people hung over the garbage can...YUK!!! I hate seeing people like that!! Enjoy your trip!!! Make sure you take in as much as you can!!

I can't read in the car either, it really bothers me. Other than that, I never get motion sick, and I've never had a problem on mission space. I expect that I would if I tried to read the newspaper on it.

If something is going to bother you it is the g-forces from the spinning. Your eyes will tell your brain that you're going forward, but your ears may say that you're spinning in a circle.

Midway type spinning rides probably aren't a good indication of this type of motion sickness. I've actually felt a little off from the astro orbiter the once time I did that, never tried the teacups.

I think the only way to know is to try it. My advice is to ride the orange side on your way out of the park so if it affects you, you don't risk a large portion of your touring time.

I don't know if you'll get sick, but to decrease the chances of that happening, I suggest the following:

1.) Work you up to this attraction- This should NOT be one of the first rides you visit
2.) DO NOT ride this attraction during the middle of the day - The heat alone can effect you once you get off.
3.) Do NOT eat before riding- I would suggest drink plenty of fluids and eat afterwards.
4.) Breathe!- When your inside and the capsule is shut, don't start to panic. Relax and breathe
5.) Keep your eyes on that screen!- Take it from me. I looked away for a second and the next thing I know EVERYTHING felt a little off. Its hard to regain your senses when that happens.

Follow those 5 things and you should be ok.
Enjoy your trip to Outter Space! See you when you return.

I get very sick on Star Tours, Body Wars, Back to the Future etc but I still tried Mission Space before the mild version was released. I was sick to death the entire day, light headed and dizzy and nauseaus for hours....No way will you get me back on that thing

So the Green side is the same thing just without the G's?

Doesn't sound as fun. :confused3

(I have to ride the Green side next trip - Orange will make me puke.)

So if you do get sick, is there anything that will help you regain your bearings back afterwards?? Pepto, aspirin??? I sure wouldn't want a day wasted being ill.

My family loves roller coasters and all kinds of Disney rides-this one made us all ill, leave the park, feeling crummy for the rest of the day kind of sick. I can now do the non spinning side and am OK. Since this is your first time, just do the green side and enjoy everything else.

We were just at Epcot last week. We rode the Green Mission Space first. My 11 year old daughter was nervous, but said "that was nothing". We rode the orange right before we left and I could see why some people got sick! Several times during the day, they have to stop the ride because of a "protein spill".
There is a fan of cool air blowing right on your face. Take deep breaths and keep your eyes on the screen. I did need to take 5 minutes to sit down outside, but was fine after that.
There is a bigger difference between the green and orange than I expected.
I would have been very dissapointed if I had not tried it.
My 11 year old thought it was awsome and she is a timid rider!
Good Luck!

I'm similar to you- I can do any ride and be fine, but I do get carsick. I tried MS Orange because no one else in my party was willing to ride and if I was going to do it, I would choose the more intense one.

Worst 10 minutes of my life! The air went into my eyes and completely dried out my contacts. I just wanted to close my eyes but they said that would make you even more sick. You are so closed in that it feels like a coffin. Luckily I did it during Illuminations so it was the end of the day and I could back to the hotel to recover. If I had done it earlier, it probably would have ruined the day.

Usually no rides phase me, but this one did. I rode the Orange (no Green existed at the time) and came very close to losing it! The burly guy riding with us was also making strange moaning noises, which didn't help me at all! :lmao: I tried staring at the screen (eyes glued wide open), breathing deeply ... but it felt like eternity until it was over!

But my friend that rode with me had no problem whatsoever. She got off and wanted to ride again!

I'm going to try the Green next month and see how that goes!

Agree with mickey nicky,

Had to go back to hotel and lie down for the day to recover. People have all sorts of stimuli that their bodies are especially sensitive to. I hate simulators. I can do any rollercoaster but not sims!

Avoid it. It's hardly that great as a ride anyway. IMHO

I did the less intense Mission Space and was fine. Actually, I rode it several times during my trip. You move forward, backward, & side to side, but it's really smooth.

My DH is a big guy, and loves all thrill rides. ( I woudnt even consider Mission Space before they added the milder side).

He was so sick after going on this, he has sworn never to go on it again. Not nausous just felt crappy and dizzy all day, kind of ruined the rest of the day for him, and again nothing ever bothers him.

That being said, we will try the milder side this trip, I havent heard any bad reviews about that side.

Any one else heard anything bad about the Green side?

I rode the side with the spinning (orange side?) when we were there last January. I thought I could take it. I was surprised by what put the panic in me - When they closed down that door! It was way too close in for me.:sad1:

I can't understand why this ride treats my body differently. I'm not claustrophobic , love Everest, RnR coaster, T of T, and all the other simulator rides but both the intense and non-intense versions made me feel bad, headache.. not wanting to throw up but just a bad feeling.

Normally I'd say try it and find out, but to be honest I wish I had not.

I really wanted to like it but more room for those that do, and I hope you have fun!
