Hi All-

I went shopping for a formal dress on Saturday for my upcoming Western Magic cruise. I ended up with two dresses, one for formal night, one for semi-formal, because I loved them both.

The dress that I purchased for formal night is a floor length, fitted, sleeveless, black, beaded gown. I loved it from the time I saw it, but wasn't convinced until another lady in the fitting room saw me in it and said, "WOW!" (I'm pretty sure it was a good 'wow' and not an "OMG I'm blind" 'wow'). Will I be overdressed in a floor length evening gown? Will there be anyone else on the ship dressed to the 9's? My DH has a beautiful black suit that he rarely gets to wear (he's a cop) and my aunt is making a dress for my daughter (will be at least ankle length), but I don't want us to be the only ones, or to feel out of place. What do others wear for formal night?

Thanks-
Erin :D

I also wore a long gown. Some people did, some people didn't. There was such a mix, I think no one would feel conspicious in whatever they wore. A long gown is appropriate and lovely. Wear it and enjoy!

Erin the dress sounds beautiful. No you will not be over dressed. I would say that most people get dressed as you will, you'll even see some man in Tux's. Your DH's black suit will be perfect. You will also find that some people do not get dressed up at all, but that is their thing.

Have a great time.

I would say "WEAR IT with pride". I'm sure it looks beautiful on you. The way I see it, everyone knows that it's formal night, even if they choose to go a little more casual, they recognize that the night is recognized as Formal Night. Therefore, no one will be surprised to see someone walk in with a gorgeous formal dress on. Now if you wore it on Tropical Night, you might get some stares, :p

Erin, I could've written your post a couple of months ago. I was originally going to wear a cocktail dress for semi-formal and formal night, until I saw a breathtakingily beautiful floor-length black formal! I ended up w/two dresses for semi-formal and formal, and DH even bought a tux to save on future rental fees! There are hundreds of people on the Magic, and we saw TONS dressed to the nines, so NO, you won't feel overdressed. This cruise is an opportunity for many (such as DH, DD and myself) to dress up.

Dress up as glitzy and glamourous as you all wish! You won't feel out of place, and you'll have a great time wearing your beautiful clothes!

I too found the perfect floor length black gown before our first cruise..I wasn't over dressed at all...everyone looks so great on formal night.

Keep it, wear it.

I have worn a floor length formal dress on every Formal night for all 10 of our DCL cruises!!!! You will NOT be overdressed at all!!! Even my girls who are now 20 and 16 would always wear their latest prom or homecoming dresses on Formal night to get another wear out of them!!!

In almost ANY situation or occation, the answer to the question "Will I be overdressed?" is NO.

You can be under-dresses, but you can never be over-dressed.

The only exception that I can think of to this rule is that if you are attending a wedding, you don't want to dress such that you upstage the bride.

When we sailed with two other couples in 2002 we took the opporunity to live it up - I mean how often do we normally get to dress up? All of our husbands had purchased tuxes so we decided to get some use out of them. We dressed up formally on both the formal and the semi-formal nights. Even on the casual nights we all wore nice dresses - not formal, but nice. Go ahead and have a magical time!!! :earsgirl: :earsboy:

No you will not be overdressed. And that's coming from someone who religiously undresses.
We were on the 3 day wonder, where there isn't a formal night, but there were a number of woman who dressed very formally for dinner (in floor length formal gowns)....and they looked beautiful.....and not out of place at all....even though most of the people weren't dressed like that...
you should wear what makes you happy.....it's your vacation and you should enjoy it.....if you enjoy taking this opportunity to go really formal, go for it....
i'm sure you'll look lovely....

Let's see. Would formal dress be overdressed for formal night? Uh, no.
Wear what you want. Dress to the max. Enjoy. Don't forget the wonderful formal pictures. Have a great time.

You wear whatever you feel good in. For both of our 7 night cruises, I wore a long black form fitting strapless formal with a slit up one leg for one formal night and a long strapless/backless deep purple form fitted with a slit up the back for the other formal. For the semi formal, I wore the "little black dress" short with spaghetti straps shot through with silver. Strappy heels with all of them. I felt beautemous!

If you are over dressed, I will be too! I have an ankle length dress that is beaded on the top and sheer and flowing on the bottom.

We are going on the western cruise on 6/19 when are you going?

When are you going on the Western cruise? We are going 6/19
