Will I like HHI?

I am so glad I found this thread. We are debating taking a short weekend trip the beginning of December. Instead of a birthday party this year for my oldest, we are going to go down for a Friday and Saturday night to celebrate her 9th birthday. We are not DVC members, but I am so tempted to buy a small contract at HHI - it is an easy drive for us and would make a great place to go for spring break. I guess we will see how well we like it.

Does anyone know if they do the campfire during the cooler months? My girls would really like this.

While the resort was beautiful and our villa was tops I really prefer being on the beach. VB is by far my pick of the 2 off site properties. I am glad we were able to visit the resort, I am not in a big hurry to go back. But this is just my opinion. Some really love it. :goodvibes

I know this is an old thread, but I just found it and had to add our two cents. We owned at OKW and VB (never been to VB) but we sold OKW to buy at HHI. We LOVE HHI for so many reasons -

- nature, camping feel
-family time
-biking
-Guiseppes
-campfires
-shopping
-golf
-resort-organized games and activities
-swimming
-crabbing
-Geo-caching
-kids/teen night out
-kayaking
-dolphins
-acorn fights (kids added that one)
-seafood (too many restaurants to list)
-Shadow sightings
-B'lou Crabbe
-great cast (Mike the pool guy is full of info. and loves to talk)
-Disney feel

We just returned from our yearly pilgrimage to WDW (OKW) - on the way home we asked our kids (ages 14, 12, 8) if they wanted to go to WDW or HHI next summer and they voted 2-0 (with one abstention) for HHI - and it was the younger ones that voted for HHI!! When we asked them why, they said more family time, biking, golf and better pool. We adults had already secretly voted for HHI for the same reasons, but we had no idea the kids would agree.

They love the resort activities - the 8 yr old loves B'Lou's scary stories and the campfire, the 12 yr old loves HH golf and acorn fights in the fall, and the 14 yr old agreed that the "teen" activities at HHI were great last spring break.

We live about 10 hours away and have visited HHI fall break, spring break and New Years (always swam and kayaked in Oct.), but never been in the summer. Now we have reservations for Thanksgiving and next June and are on wait list for Spring Break.

We can't think of one negative - in fact, we think being off the beach is a positive because its quieter and (probably owing to an out-of-sight-out-of-mind mentality), the kids aren't consumed with the beach (and sand) as they would be if it was in our face 24-7. We still do the beach thing - but usually only once or twice during the week.

If you're all about the beach - go to Vero.
If you like quiet and nature, HHI is perfect - period.

WE :lovestruc LOVE:lovestruc HHI!
We booked 5 nights over Easter break last year and couldn't stand to leave- so we booked a 6th night on cash. My favorite thing is the nature. They have a guided nature walk or tour almost every morning. The beach was nice- I loved powdery sand. (I am used to MD beaches). We used the shuttle. It comes every 30 minutes I think. The rooms are the best. Every room has a water view of some sort (marsh, marina, or pool). We hit Savannah for 1 day- it was less than an hour away and a great day trip. It was just a wonderful, relaxing week. I had an offer in on a resale before I was even unpacked!

We are leaving on Sat., Nov 8th for four days. We aren't staying at the Disney resort, but will be visiting. I am hoping to do the Kayak 2 hour tour when there. I hope I really like it.....and hope the hubby does too, so then I can add on some points! Still trying to figure out where to eat.....thanks for all the info, I'm really excited. Lets hope the weather cooperates! :goodvibes

What type of restaurants are you looking for?

They don't have to be the really expensive, anniversary type of restaraunts. Rather, the ones that have very good food, reasonably priced. Husbands not too crazy about seafood, so ones that have a variety of choices would be great.

Ok, well, first, in Shelter Cove right across the marina from the resort in San Miguel's (Mexican obviously) which is moderately priced (for a resort community) with consistently good food (and margaritas!). In Palmetto Dunes, where the Beach House is located, is Alexander's which has a little bit of everything and nice atmosphere. Crazy Crab on the north end of the Island is a seafood restaurant that has some other things. The food is good, but the attraction here is the view. The Old Oyster Factory also has a nice variety and a lovely view. The CMs at the resort will give you directions. If you'd like to go back into Sea Pines Plantation at the south end of the Island (it costs $5 but you can come and go all day and there are several things to see back there), there is the Salty Dog at South Beach (mostly for lunch), Truffles at Sea Pines Center, and several restaurants at Harbour Town. Woody's at Palmetto Bay Marina is also good for lunch.

I hope you have fun. I'll be anxious to hear what you thought about HHead.

Thanks SusieBea! I'm printing this off! I also think Alexander's has an early bird special which we were going to try to get to. :thumbsup2

I really enjoyed reading this old thread........great pictures/commentary about HHI. We can't wait to try it. I too was skeptical with the beach being a mile a way but I never really hear anything negative about Dis at HHI so we are going for it in July. I think the kids will still enjoy it.

The food is fantastic and definitely worth the price. All made from scratch and made to order.

I'm looking forward to trying it also. Is that mall the same one where Wal-mart is? There's also a birding store in the mall I'm thinking of. I just hope it's open off season since that's when we'll be going.

Simba's Mom,

It is in Pineland Station. If you are coming from the HHI resort it is just past the shopping center with Bi-Lo and Sam's. In Pineland Station you will find Stein Mart.

To find the restaurant, park in front and make your way through to the back by the duck pond.

Even in the off season, she will be open. I think she closes for major holidays, but other than that she is open. I asked her when we were there over Christmas and she stated that she needs to stay open to earn a living. She said that she has some regulars who "wouldn't get their meal" if she wasn't open. As she requires reservations for most meals there is very little waste as she knows how many to expect for lunch and dinner.

I hope you will like it. Dye is very passionate about her cooking and the gullah culture. Express an interest and she will tell you all sorts of stories.

Linda
