Will I like Bubble Tea?

When I was in college about 4 years ago a bubble tea craze went through my campus. An authentic Bubble Tea cafe opened a few blocks away. I was really excited to try it and all I can say is GROSS! Mine was served with a really wide straw and I felt like I was sucking up snot balls. The tapioca balls were a little smaller than gumballs and were flavorless. I really didn't like it.

I was thinking about scouting this out before this thread. I have a iron stomach. But, after reading these posts, and descriptions. Now, i will skip it. Yuckyyyy.

A lady I work with really wants me to try this. She is from Taiwan and really likes this stuff. I am pretty sure that it would make me gag due to the texture of it. She brought some stuff to a potluck once and the only way I could describe it was that is was like "jello soup". It was a cold sweet liquid with chunks of jello in it. Mostly unflavored gelatin. I took a swig of that and almost threw up. It didn't taste bad, it was just the texture that was too much. This is how I envision bubble tea.

Isn't the correct name of the tea Boba Milk tea?

At least that is whatthey are called her in California. And they do tatse....odd. I think it is an aquired taste.

I'm from California as well, very popular in my area.

The boba is the tapioca pearls. The tea itself is usually offered in a variety of flavors. I've also had more milkshake consistancy drinks called "snow" from bubble tea places. They also have blended slushie drinks called "slush".

I've tried the tapioca pearls many times but it's just not something I enjoy. The texture of the pearl is very chewy and usually overwhelms the drink in my eyes. They have special thicker straws for these drinks to allow you to sip the pearls.

The teas however are really delicious. I've seen flavors like lichi and starfruit on the menus but I always find myself getting strawberry.

Dh and I first tried Bubble Tea in California a couple of years ago. I loved it, Dh hated it. I love tapioca, he hates tapioca. It's really a question of textures; there are many textures I can't tolerate, but tapioca happens to be one I like so I think that's why I really enjoy Bubble Tea. Hey, it never hurts to try something; maybe you'll like it!
