Will I get a "hard sell" of SSR thru Disney?

I finally got the OK from DH to go ahead with purchasing a DVC.

I'm going to give my guide a call tomorrow (as fate would have it, she left a message for me while I was at work today!) to enquire about availability of BWV. I've thought pretty long and hard about this, and SSR just isn't going to do it for me.

Will I be pressured to buy into SSR, or will my guide get her commission regardless (lol)?

My guide didn't give me the run around when I asked for BCV. She said it sounded like I had done my homework and knew what I wanted. (I did) You won't have any problem, just tell them you have decided on BWV. Good luck.

We had absolutely no problem exploring sites other than SSR with our guide. She said whatever we wanted she would get us-with the caveat that BCV would be the most difficult because of its smaller size and wait list. She did point out though that unless you are going to be booking at that 11 month window all of the time it was not as big an issue as we seemed to think. In the end, the price at SSR was just too good to pass us so that's Home to us for better or worse. We do hope to try them all though and that's the magic of DVC.

Have you looked at the DVC re-sellers boards to see if you can get a better deal than going through Disney. Going through Disney you will get the use month you want and you can book right away. Going through a re-seller you will probably get a better price but it will take about two months to close if you pass ROFR. You might want to give the Timeshare store a call to see what they think. We used Kristie and she was great.

Thanks for the advice! I'm hoping all goes well now that I've made up my mind.

As for buying a re-sell, I would definetely look into that but I need to do Disney financing. Basically, between working a full-time job, a part-time job, and taking care of a 2 year old, time is money for me and I don't want to have to call around trying to get financing. I want a "one stop shop," kwim? If I were paying cash, I'd defientely go the resale route.

I've heard a couple of reports of a hard sell but only a couple. One thing you will find is that if you tour, there are frequently incentives that are only good 3 days and DVC will stick to it. So if you're looking at any specials or financing, you may want to explore that issue a bit more. I only recall hearing this applied to tours but have heard that they go back years and keep a permanent profile on anyone that has toured.

We never took any tours. Frankly, the only way I'd buy SSR was if they offered me F&F.

No...they DO keep your profile on record. They had mine from when I toured OKW...way back when it was new.

Also...it is my understanding (at least in '02) that guides (mine told me) draw a regular salary and don't get comission @ Disney. That's why the "price is the price" and there is no cut-throating or underselling going on as other timeshares.
Whether that is still true or not...don't know/don't care

I'm sure there is some type of incentive system for the guides even if not a strict salary.

We signed up for a tour in 2002, but could not make it because my dd ended up in the hospital while we were on vacation.

Then, when I called to see about purchasing DVC in 2004, the person on the phone asked my name. When I gave it to her, she said, "Ohhh...hmmm....can I ask why you made an appointment to tour DVC in 2002, and then didn't show up, or even call to let us know you weren't coming?

I was SOOO taken back!! When I explained the reason why, she said calmly, "I see. Well, I will make a note of that on your record." My record??!!!! What am I, in school??!!! I ALMOST hung up the phone, and ended my DVC journey right there. The germs at WDW made my 11 month old so sick that she spent the last 3 days of our vacation in a pediatric hospital, and you're going to note it "on my record" when I am trying to spend $15,000 on your timeshare!!!!

But, then my guide was SOOOO super nice that I calmed down enough to buy (albeit resale).

But yes....DVC is like big brother....they keep VERY good records!!

Wow, how incredibly rude of her! It is amazing to me how people can work in the service industry and be so completely clueless (or careless) about the manner in which they speak to the customer. Reminds me of my trip last night to the drugstore... don't get me started!

So if you were to call today, the Guide most likely would have said, "Oh, how is DD (name deleted), I see she was admitted to room X in the pediatric ward..... Oh and Dr. X is also a DVC member, I hope you were satisified with her care How may I help you today, oh wait .......I just got your DISboards log, you were ROFRed on BCV points for your UY, I just happen to have....."

And people are complaining about the NSA! I think they subcontract for Disney!

I don't know about the links but there's no way hospitals will let that info out unless the patient or guardian gives written permission to do so. It's likely just a link to the main web-page for the entity in question if it's even there.

Dear Greenban-I know you were being silly and very tongue-in-cheek about DVC records crossmatching names to things like hospital stays, etc. I work in a hospital and I know for a FACT with HIPPA regulations that that is absolutely not true(or possible). I just don't want to scare people if they don't get your humor.

Very funny, Tony!!! But, I DO get your point. Mammatojon....that's just it....it wasn't the fault of the person I spoke to on the phone (although, she probably could've been a little nicer). WDW (and DVC) can be VERY "big brother-ish". They seriously wanted to know how I could be so rude as to not show up, and not call....and, that seriously is rude....but, honestly....I didn't think about DVC for MONTHS after we got back. Then, one day it was, "Oh my goodness....we didn't make our appt. at WDW!!!" DH turned to me and said, "What?" It really wasn't on my mind until we started thinking of going back.

It's funny. Now that they started asking the ages of all kids on the ressie (not adults, mind you....just kids), when my dd turned 3 EVERYONE in WDW's system knew it!! There were a few times when a res agent would say, "You know, now that your dd is 3 you have to pay for her." Lately, (now that she is 4) I haven't heard that at all. And, I planned to pay for her....we NEVER say she is younger than she is...she is God's gift to us, and every year that we have her is a TOTAL blessing....we are honored to pay for her. But, WDW keeps CLOSE tabs on kids in the system, and when they "bump" up to the next age group. I don't care how hard WDW says their "computers are not linked", and they "don't know"....they know SOOO much more than they are letting on. Fraud must be huge for that company.

The person on the phone probably didn't realize JUST how rude and insensitive they were being, but I would have asked for the manager on that one.

I would check with the Timeshare Store and other Resellers. Some may offer financing...

I was told (and I may be mistaken here) that because a TS is a luxury item, they (the resell place) can't take comission on them. So most make their money through advertising fees, Closing costs and some through financing. It is worth checking out.

What ARE points for other resorts going for through DVC now? Are they the same as SSR ($98 with no promos) or are they cheaper? Anyone know?
