I bet it takes awhile - things are currently headed in the wrong direction
I kinda hope it never comes back. Hugging dirty costumes that other people hugged as well always grossed me out even before covid. High fives, and special interactions are more my style. But than again I was never a hugger.
no one is forcing you to hug the characters.
Unfortunately the vaccination rate in both the nation and Florida is still below 60%. It's going to take about a year and a half at the current contagion rate before consideration will be given to resume close contact. At that time it would be a good idea to limit contact with the characters to children and special needs adults only.
I apologize. I did not intend to leave you with the impression that children and special needs adults should engage in close contact with the characters while the pandemic is still a danger. Rather I was suggesting that Disney revise their guidelines for close character contact after the pandemic is over. If Disney wants to continue to allow adults to have close character contact, then only allow them to interact with Edna Mode.Children and special needs adults can pass on the virus as well. If it isn't safe to hug the characters yet then so be it.
I would just be content with photopass photographers present even if you are standing in front of a roped off character
I actually like the current situation. The lines move much faster, the characters are free to improv their personalities more and no more autograph books holding everything up.
NOTE: Have a kid who lives for meets and his autograph book. He doesn't understand anything that is happening and I was worried how he'd handle the new way. He did GREAT! It was fun to interact back and forth, and he was looking for them like it became a treasure hunt.
I can see where it works better for sure, but it's not the experience that some fans want. Maybe a good mix going forward would be nice. You can have some setup as the traditional meet & greet, inside the Fairytale Hall or something, then also just some distanced appearances out in the park, where it's really a wave and a quick photo. I would certianly be more apt to do the latter personally.
Def agree that you keep the indoor structured meets. But these outdoor ones were great, they blended with the areas they were in and were actually fun.
Also if we go with the new corporate mentality - the harder it is to get up close and personal the more character meals you can sell. Better yet a few After Hours Character events. Pay the characters for 3 hours and you collect a full day price ticket from each guest.
My opinion of all this is the reason why Disney Parks do not allow the characters to hug or give autographs these days for these reasons
A. Money
B. Parents wasting time getting autograph books out of their kids purses
C. Fears of other illnesses such as colds/flu measles chicken pox
D. All of the above
The answer to this is most probably D and when you look at it and this is probably where Disney Parks gets most of their money and when this new rule came out it probably hurt Disney Parks a lot in business because every shop you see sells autograph books every day and if autographs aren't brought back there won't be any more sales of autograph books. But when you look at it as I mentioned in countless posts about this subject is kids or anyone CANNOT catch an illness from a hug because hugs are the safest interactions that people give all the time. Another idea that could work is that they should offer kids and everybody chances to meet characters in an interactive setting called The Character Show and it would be a hit because kids and everyone would be given cards with questions to ask face characters and they would respond to answers and after the show characters would be able to take pictures with everyone and an autograph session would be featured just like a real talk show and I can bet if The Character Show would be a success Disney Parks would get a lot of people to participate in it who are character fans

Seeing characters is a huge draw for families with kids. Without the characters Disney is a very average theme park. There are really only 2 great rides out of the 4 parks. The rest are just okay or liked due to nostalgia.Huh? Are you really suggesting that Disney Parks get most of their money from people being able to hug characters? Or even meeting them? There may be a few people who only come to the parks to meet characters, but I suspect it is a very small percentage. It is definitely not where the parks make most of their money.
As for not being able to catch an illness from a hug - where the heck did you get that idea? Hugging is GREAT for transmitting illness. Less so for masked characters (e.g. Mickey) but even there it isn't like they are in some sort of a air-locked chamber, their "heads" have vents/holes for them to breath.

No offense, but there's something wrong with you. You almost make me lose hope for to hug the characters again. My opinion of all this is the reason why Disney Parks do not allow the characters to hug or give autographs these days for these reasons
