Will Flight prices drop

Hi there,

I am going to run in the DL half marathon Labor day weekend. Normally, I fly Southwest, so I know that if the prices drop I can adjust my flight. I honestly don't have any experience with other airlines.

We are looking at flying into SNA and will need to fly with someone other than Southwest. Can anyone tell me if prices on other airlines will go down (I know that it's a complete guess, but often history repeats itself.) Should we wait for a few more weeks or snag flights now. They just went from $258 to $340 this week. Anyone have an educated guess?

Thanks for any advice?

You are flying on a holiday weekend. They will likely not drop, but nothing is ever guaranteed. Holiday weekend trips should always be booked 4-6 months in advance for the optimal fare.

Seriously no one on this board can tell you which way fares on a specific dates and a specific city pair is going to turn. You already know what "cheap" fares between your city pairs could be, but there is no guarantee that they will ever reach that level again in the current economy. Airlines are slashing unprofitable routes.

Figure out how much you are willing to spend and if fares dip below it then go for it. if they don't dip during your period, then cancel your trip in hopes of a cheaper deal later.

Since gasoline prices are currently going up the fuel costs for airlines will also go up (or the long-term contracts will) so don't be surprised if they go up until gas prices start down again.

Check out www.farecast.com. It predicts changes in flight prices as well as listing all the prices for the airports and any nearby airports. It doesn't have Southwest, but you said you can't use SW this time anyway.

You can compare with Expedia, Orbitz and Travelocity on the site - it gives you the option to check your itinerary across sites in multiple windows.

I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of their predictions, but I have used them to check fares before booking.

I have to go to Atlanta in late September for a couple of days. I checked Delta earlier today and the flights I booked would now cost me almost $100 higher than when I actually booked them late last month.
