With the news today that the economy may be beginning to bounce back - and Disney's announcement last year that they will be beginning to cut back on the deep discounts - how do you think they will react to the news????

Will they wait to see another quarter report to ensure it is continuing to grow?

What discounts could go first? Free dining - room discounts - etc.

Your thoughts?

Disney bases their promotions on what they see projected in their reservations database - how many rooms exist for certain periods, how many rooms are on hold, how many people are canceling etc - I am sure they have some magic formulas.

I doubt they "react" to news reports.

They test the waters with PIN offers for dining and room discounts etc - and then, test again, and then offer promotions based on those tests.

Remember, promotions are used to fill empty hotel rooms - and nothing else.

Exactly. They aren't doing these pin codes because they feel sorry for us. It is to get us there to spend our money. There are always slow times at Disney and they want them as full as possible.

I was thinking of the really deep discounts they offered last year, like the 4/3 deal or the extending the free dining till the end of the year, etc.

I think the pin codes are great!

I think Disney will continue to offer the big discounts for at least the remainder of this year, and probably longer until the economy fully improves. The news released about the economy today was the first positive news we've heard about the economy in a LONG time, and it wasn't even significant really. With unemployment still in the double digits, I suspect Disney will continue to offer these good deals, most likely until people start getting jobs again!

I think Disney will offer some really good promotions in 2010 because there will be a rush for a lot of people to go to US for the Harry Potter park. Disney will want people to "base" with them and go to Disney with a little side trip to US, instead of the other way around.

Correct - first are bouncebacks - a year in advance. Then come the PINs. Then DVR offers and finally public offers.

They want to fill their properties. And depending on how this goes, they'll offer FD or discount on rooms.

That's how we're gonna do it. Base out of Disney and make the side trip to Universal to hit the Harry Potter stuff.

I think the newer discounts might go away, because they'll no longer need to entice as many people to stay in their hotels.

Free Dining has been a staple discount during August and September for many years, so I doubt they'll drop it. As have been package and room discounts during other parts of Value season.

They've already cut back slightly this year, which can be seen in the blackout dates for various promotions. This isn't a reaction to the news, but a reaction to people choosing to vacation during certain times again.
