Will dining reservations allow us to split up?

We have 4 people in our family and on our reservation. My husband and son want to go to one restaurant and my other son and I want to go to a different one, on the same evening.
Will Disney dining allow us to book two reservations for 2 people each at the same time on the same day or would these reservations be subject to cancellation for double booking?
Thanks for your opinions (but no flames about wanting to split up while on vacation, please)!
