Will booking get tougher as all the banked points need to be used?

Just wondering if anyone knows if a lot of DVC is being banked from the economy and terror ordeal, meaning in the next year all of a sudden a lot of points need to be used or lost? There are no limits on how many owners can bank in a given year correct?

I don't have a good answer, but I do know that banking and borrowing can be suspended if the balance gets too far out of wack. I am not sure what the criteria is for this point to be reached. Also remember that the use of banked points would be spread out over the different use years.

Remember there are other uses for points, such as this February's DVC members only 4-day cruise which will take a lot of points out of the regular DVC resorts points inventory.

That's a very good question, Jade.
It's one that I've never seen or considered. While we assume DVC manages the point system and keeps things in order, you might be right that there will be an abundance of travel when the economy rebounds. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
As mentioned, you can do so many things with points that it may not become an issue. We'll keep our fingers crossed.

Best regards,
Shontell

I tend to agree with Maistre Gracey on this one and look for banking to balance out borrowing. After reading all the posts about borrowed points on the Member Cruise Thread, I'm beginning to think that borrowing is far more common than banking! :teeth: :teeth: Maybe booking will get EASIER next year!

LOL! We spent more points than ever this year, I WISH we had points that we needed to use or lose! If the economy would improve, we could buy some more.

When you book a DVC Cruise or Concierge Collection or Adventurer Collection, that also uses up DVC member inventory at DVC resorts as a corresponding amount of capacity is turned over for rental through CRO.

The high vacancy factor after 9/11 undoubtedly means that there was a lot of point banking over the past 11 months. This is likely to mean there will be a high demand for DVC reservations during the next 12 months -- with demand likely to exceed supply.

Although Disney is in no way obligated to do so, Disney could transfer some CRO-controled DVC resort inventory back into DVC member inventory -- especially inventory that would go unsold anyway -- to keep the DVC system "whole" and to make sure that DVC members can get the reservations they want (and thus spend money at Disney parks, shops, and restaurants). Right now, that could be good business for Disney. The alternative would be that members who are unable to get reservations would watch banked points expire and/or would have to bank excessive amounts of current year points into the following year again -- which could be detrimental to DVC member satisfaction and the DVC reservation system.

I'm not sure the economy has had the same effect on DVC has other Disney bookings. After all we've already paid- so we are prety much committed to going- we may drive instead of fly, go to the parks less, eat in more, but I believe we are still going, due to our investment in DVC. It would be interesting to start a poll how many cancelled/postponed DVC trips AND banked points into the next year (not rescheduled later the same use year or used them elsewhere). IMHO I bet its not alot.

Of the 60,000plus members it seems like most visited WDW this past year without much hesitation, according to the activity on this board. I know this isnt a complete indicator, but it gives some kind of insight that DVCers dont like the idea of passing up on the annual or more trips.

In fact I am surprised at the number of DVCers who travel by car. We live in NC and always fly, in fact we flew 2 weeks after 9/11 to WDW. Call me crazy but it was our vacation, planned for 8 mos. ahead and Osama nor his moma was gonna stop us.

My point is I wouldnt be overly concerned about DVC resorts being any more booked than usual, although it still is a good idea to book as far in advance as possible.

Just my 2 cents worth.

kem330, a poll would be good. For other reasons we are planning to wait a year and bring some extra family-needing more points etc and hope its not too booked up-thats what got us thinking. Anyway, I'm afraid a poll on this board may be only so helpfull because most of us on here are Disney fanatics and of course we all go no matter what-not that theres anything wrong with that. Is there anyway to see how the points are being used, banked, borrowed etc for all members?

I'm doing my part to equalize the structure:smooth:

I will be comfortably relaxing in my 2 Br at OKW in a short while. Even after my last add-on, I'm still borrowing from the following year.

by the end of this year we have used..... hmmmmmmm....... close to 1000 points for DVC trips... prolly more like 1300..... (coz we borrow a lot from 2003.... lol)

It hasnt slowed us down at all..........
