Just past ROFR!!! :yay: :yay: :yay:
Here comes the posts....

I have searched multiple discussions and still request some advice from you veterans.

I have been a longtime lurker on the dis boards and have never joined or posted until just recently. (The quiet type). I am also about to be a newbie renter (before ever having stayed at DVC!) because we want to go on the cruise first so we need more moolah.

Other then providing my name/phone number/talking on the phone is there any other way I can make someone feel comfortable enough in order to rent points from me?
I had researched starting a paypal merchant account (they take 2.9% per payment) so that the person could use a credit card and perhaps feel more secure - is this a good idea?

TYTY.

Terri,

It depends what you are comfortable with doing. There are so many people that want to rent that you could do nothing more than your first few points (sharing pertinent info/communication) and you would be fine. I wouldn't add anything to your side unless it's what you want.

Paypal. I had a renter who wanted me to sign up. I didn't. If a renter wants to use paypal there are plenty of other options for them....many who take it. I posted a thread about whether Paypal gives any more security to the renter. I decided not to because other DVCers shared the ins and outs of Paypal from their personal experiences. One had identity theft through Paypal and was not pleased with their lack of assistance in this matter. Others explained to me that renters like Paypal because they believe that it gives them a guarantee with this transaction. However, they told me that is absolutely false. Paypal will not, in the end, get involved in intanglible items. Also, many shared that the opposite could happen. That a renter could hold up the payment by challenging the agreement because of being dissatisfied. I know those statements are complete opposites but both were shared. I know that there are many who use Paypal everyday and love it as well. I'm just sharing the information that I gained from these boards. I didn't sign up because of all of the above and because I didn't plan on renting more than this one time. Hopefully. But grateful to be able to rent.

Do not make my mistake. Do not think that it is your job, solely, to make the renter feel comfortable. They either trust the process or they don't. It's not your job Terri.

All the best,

Lisa

There's a lot you can do. Go through ebay and set up one of their fair-square traders (or whatever they are called) accounts. But things like that take time and money. How much are you willing to do? Is this going to be a one time rental, or are you going to make a habit of it?

Personally, if you have a listed phone number, real street address and come across as a reasonable person in writing and on the phone, that's enough for many people. Having a stable, verifiable job is another huge factor for me. I've done a number of VRBO rentals, and knowing the person works as, say, an accountant at General Motors leads me to believe it extremely unlikely they are going to rip me off for a few thousands bucks.

It's all about what you are comfortable doing.

Hopefully this is just a one time thing. Renting the points and purchasing the cruise seems to be a more fiscally sound option rather then using points to book the cruise.
Thanks for the advice.

Find a friend or coworker who wants to go to Disney and offer them the use of your vacation points for a fee.

Terri,
You need a contract, payment arrangments, you will be the one to turn in their Magical Express Air arrangements, if they want the Disney Dining Plan... you may know this, but make sure that you have confidence when talking or emailing your potential renter. You need fairly good Disney knowledge. There will be Disney questions. If you have all this and you have not convinced the potential renter that you are trustworthy, then look for another renter. If they happen to be a Disboard member, it really helps to have a higher post count. Maybe not to some, but for most.
You need to know how you are going to handle the final payment, then mailing your potential renter their confirmation. It has to be in their name.

I rented before I became a DVC member, not from the disboard either. I did pay with Paypal, I felt very secure using it. I paid with a credit card, I felt that I had the backing of the credit card co. I did not know about the things that could go wrong as previously posted.

Good luck, if you need to ask me anything, just PM me. :thumbsup2

I've just recently got into a contract with a DVC member from Disboards. I'm the renter. These are the things that made me feel comfortable about the member, frankly it works both ways. :)

1. Had a decent post count on disboards.com (over 500)
2. Had a reference they provided.
3. Was prompt in replying emails and providing info and was very nice. :)
4. Had a real email address from their job, which happened to be a school and I was able to verify the person's name and phone number from the school website ( big bonus). Would have been ok if it were a company, would be afraid of free email accounts.
5. Would rent to a first time renter. :)
