Will 3 1/2 & 4 yr old be safe w/ extra rails in berth?

Will 3 1/2 & 4 yr olds be safe w/ extra safety rails in berth? We're traveling w/ another family who is very worried about this. DCL says they will be fine. I'd love to hear from someone who had little ones in the berth aka bunk bed.

Personally I wouldn't put a child that small/young in the top bunk...even with bunk beds at home I think they recommend you don't put them up there until they are 6. My daughter will be 4 when we cruise again and either myself, my friend or the 14 year old we are will take the top bunk.

DS was 3 1/2 when he slept up there and he was fine. It was actually a highlight of the trip for him, LOL! In fact when we came home and it was time to buy him a big boy bed, he chose a loft bed, "just like on the Disney Boat".

The side rail they provide covers enough of the bed that I think a 4 yo would do fine as long as they are not a sleep walker or extremely restless sleeper. The berth is a little less than 5 ft off the ground so I feel it will be a decision you will have to make probably when you get there. You can always resort to sleeping in the bunk yourself!

My DS5 slept on the top bunk last year with no problems. He loved sleeping in the top bunk. However, I agree with the above post if you have a restless sleeper you may want to ask for an extra rail. Our DS2 slept on the lower bed and we asked for an extra rail for the head of the bead. This was his first time in the "big boy bed". We originally asked for a pack and play but he climbed right out (which he never did at home). As he was leaning on the side it collapsed and he fell down. So, we moved him over to the lower bunk without incident.

Our girls were 6, 4 1/2 and 3 1/2 when they sailed with us last and took turns sleeping on the top bunk. They played up there too. They are not restless sleepers though. They barely move so it was no problem. They absolutely loved it! I did scoot their pillow more toward the center of the bed so their heads weren't next to the opening.

Our group has had a 3 and a 4 year old sleep in the "top" bed. No problems -- part of the excitement of Disney!!!!!!!!

BTW - the grown-ups bed is a king size and we frequently had our smallest child sleep with us.

Another family with a 3 year old when we sailed who slept on the top bunk and loved it. Our 3 kids rotated beds every night so every one of them got to sleep on the top bunk, the bottom bunk and the murphy bed. Like others said the bunk was the highlight of the trip. Of course our 3 year old didnt move much either because he was dead tired but he would have been crushed if he couldnt have slept up there. We didnt ask for an extra rail but we did put his head next to the rail since he was so short he could scoot down and be just fine.
