What do want to buy at the grocery/liquor store?

Shall we assume you won't have a car?

If you just want a basic convenience store selection, including some wine, beer and liquor, there's Wilderness Lodge Mercantile off the lobby. Yes, the selection is limited and the prices are resort prices, but you're likely to save so much time and cab fare that you'll still come out ahead.

The closest Publix store is at 7880 Winter Garden Vineland Rd, Windermere, FL. The driving distance is about 4.6 miles according to the Publix website. The route requires exiting from Walt Disney World using public roads that go behind the Magic Kingdom. Cab drivers may not be familiar with the store or the route because they're unlikely to take guests that way.

Grocery stores in Florida sell beer and wine. Liquor is sold at liquor stores, which are often in the same shopping center as grocery stores.

Publix has a liquor store adjacent to its grocery store on Winter Garden Vineland Rd in Windermere.

No. We won't have a car. Sounds like publix will be the simplest option. I guess the only way to get there would be a taxi. We need to go for snacks, beer and whiskey. Thanks for the help.

Why not just get groceries delivered? The delivery fee would be cheaper than cab fare and you wouldn't have to waste time going to the store..

Actually, there is a closer grocery store than the Publix in Windermere...which is probably about 10 miles from Wilderness Lodge. The Winn-Dixie on Apopka Vineland Road is about 6 miles....most of it thru Disney property by taking Timberline Drive from WL to the first traffic light and turn left on World Drive..you can only drive a short distance on World in this direction and will come to a Stop sign at the intersection of Vista Blvd.....you will need to go straight onto Vista Blvd which will take you past Ft. Wilderness, past the entrance to the new Golden Oaks development, and some backstage areas (warehouses and such) to the intersection of Winter Garden Vineland Road...make a right on WGV Road and follow to the intersection of Apopka Vineland Road (which is State Route 535) make a left on Apopka Vineland and about 1/4 mile on your right is the Winn-Dixie. There is also an ABC liquor store in the front of the WD parking lot. We have driven this route many times when staying at VWL.....it is a back way, but, not restricted at all....you should have very little traffic going this way ...at least until you arrive at Apopka Vineland Road which tends to be more congested. However, that said.....if you do not have your own transportation it will most likely cost you at least $20 one way for taxi fare. So, IMO, w/o transportation you would be better to use a grocery service such as Garden Grocer or WeGoShop...both will deliver to your resort.

You could rent a car for the day from the Car Care Center which is less than 3 miles from Widerness lodge. One day rental if you rent on a weekend can be as low at $25. for a 24 hr period. Alamo is located at the Car Care Center and they will come and pick you up at the resort if you call ahead of time. Then you will be free to do what ever you want for the day.

Also is convenient in case you forgot to pack something then you will have the ability to go to walmart which is about 4 miles from the Winn Dixie. Exit Winnie Dixie turn left. First red light which is at Palm Parkway turn left and Walmart is down the road about 3 miles on the left. They also have a liquor store next door.

And a huge selection of Disney souvenir cheaper than at Disney.

:)I agree with another poster. I would use Garden Grocer or We Go Shop and order what you want. They will be happy to deliver it to you and from what I have read it is easy and they are both very reputable and have great comments on the DIS.

From from Wilderness Lodge to Publix in Windermere is 4.6 miles, not 10 miles. However, the directions at the Google Maps site makes it seem much further. Not only does Google think that the Publix is way north from where it really is (Winter Garden Vineland Rd & Lakeside Village Lane), but Google also suggests driving the long way around the Magic Kingdom, past the Grand Floridian, even though it's such shorter to drive north on World Drive (past the Contemporary).

From from Wilderness Lodge to Winn-Dixie on Apopka Vineland Road is about 7 miles according to Google Maps.

I agree.
