Wild Africa Trek - Questions

Hi!
I have a couple questions for those who have been on Wild Africa Trek, as I will be experiencing this for the first time shortly.

1. Long pants or shorts? It will be hot, I realize, as it is August, but is a long pair of hiking pants better? Will we be walking through any scratchy brush where I will want to have my legs protected a bit? Thoughts?

2. Camera. I am doing the trek alone, so it's not like I will have a companion to snap pictures of, and vice versa. Also, I am the kind of person who brings a camera, and means to take pictures, but gets caught up in the moment and doesn't get many pictures at all. So I don't know if I will bother to bring it. I understand some pictures will be taken for us.

That being said, did anyone leave their camera behind and regret it, or has anyone brought it and just found it was a pain to deal with?

Thanks for any feedback you can give me - I appreciate it so much!

First --- shorts! You will not be climbing through brush - it's a defined path.
Second --- unless you're an avid photographer, don't bother bringing it. Cameras must be able to be secured to a line attached to your harness or you can't bring it. The photographer that accompanies you will take TONS of photos!! Your digital copies are included with the trek.
You also won't need bug spray, although they offer you some.

Agree on shorts for sure!! Super short shorts would make the harness you wear at some points uncomfortable, though.

I brought my camera and did use it a fair amount -- mostly taking pics of the kids experiencing stuff and hanging out at lunch with the savannah backdrop. I'm glad I brought it. That said, they do take a good amount of pics of each party as well, in a number of locations. Their pics were really good, as well. You also get some stock footage when you retrieve your photos

ENJOY!! We loved it... It was a major highlight of our last trip! :)

Curious as to what this is and what animals you will see??

You spend time at the hippo pool with a naturalist, and then take the rope bridge over to the aligators and do the same. Other than that, you are in a truck that can stop in certain areas, so you can get a good look. We also had a giraffe hanging out right by the Boma while we were having lunch, which was awsome.

Thank you. Very helpful! Shorts it is!

And I think due to my lack of photography skills, I will leave the camera behind - it will be one less thing to manage. I have been wanting to do this tour for a long time, and I am very excited!

Shorts are fine and you can only bring a small camera if it has a strap that can keep it attached to the harness. Like PPs have said, the guide will take a TON of photos for you. I did this in 2012 with my DD9 and on the lunch break, she sat by the railing and asked for pictures of "that animal....and that one....and that one....and now me..." And the guide calmly obliged. Our CD had well over 100 pictures of our trek. Enjoy it...it's worth every penny!

We loved this, I am so tempted to do it again, in October!!! You will love it! I agree with the pp's shorts!! We took a little camera, it attached easily to the vest, we only used it during lunch, but we took many pictures of the view, the animals near by and our food. LOL!!

You should wear longish shorts. I wore shorts that hit my knee. A lady in our party wore shorts that were 3-5" length & with her harness on, the shorts stayed creeping up (if you get my meaning). I'm sure it was uncomfortable for her & probably for her teenage son to see the entire time.

Do you have to bring a paper ticket or just a photo ID to get in? I can't link it in My Disney Experience and I'm getting my binder together for our trip in October. Thanks :)

We LOVED the trek! Shorts are fine. Here are some of my photos from 2013 when we did the tour. https://psukaras.smugmug.com/Disney/August-2013-Disney-Trip-and-Cr/Wild-Africa-Trek/ I used my camera and I loved the photos that our guides took, too. If you feel like you'll be distracted by a camera, then don't take yours, they will take enough for you. I'm one of those people that lugs their dSLR all over the parks all the time, so I took it on the trek, too. I'd feel like I was missing an arm if I didn't carry my camera! Enjoy the Trek! It is awesome!

Two questions.
1. If you do the trek do you usally skip riding Kilimanjaro Safari? AK usually closes early when we are there and I am thinking of how to squeeze everything in.
2. I know it says 300lb limit. I noticed that it also says the vest may not accommodate quests of a certain build. My DH can't ride some rides ( at Universal, he rides everything at Disney) because he has big shoulders, chest, etc. Do we have to worry about the vest not fitting him even if he makes the weight requirement? Just curious about others experiences.

My hubby and I aren't small, but the harnesses fit just fine. I would think he'd be just fine.

ET, yes you can skip the safari ride if you do this tour. Although, it was cool to ride the ride after doing the trek to see all of the places you got to go while on the trek. But, hands down, DO the trek, skip the safari if you're out of time.
