Wild Africa Trek question

The website says that the Wild Africa Trek:
  • Participants must be between 45 and 300 lbs. with the harness gear on. The safety harnesses used for this experience may prohibit Guests of certain body shapes or sizes from participating.
  • You must have physical stamina, comfort with heights, and the surefootedness to negotiate small hills, foliage and unsteady rope bridges on this tour.

How strenous is it? what is the safety harness for?

thanks!

IIRC, there are three areas where the safety harness is used:
  • Overlooking the Hippos
  • Crossing a suspended bridge
  • Overlooking the Crocs
I will say that I was pushing the upper weight limit, but had no difficulty with the walking portion.

You walk through some shrubbery, there is uneven ground and then on bridges over the attraction. The harness is for when you look over the hippo enclosure and walk the bridge.

Agree with what others have said, and IMO it is not at all what I'd call "strenuous". As they say, some uneven ground, you need to be comfortable with heights to negotiate the bridges, but nothing that I think is really taxing. It was me, DH, and at the time kids were DD8 and DS9.

I also agree with others thoughts on this. I did this last October (doing it again next month!) and it isn't remotely strenuous. Just a nice gentle walking pace and some uneven surfaces. I would suggest that it would only be challenging for someone who has some sort of physical handicap, whereby they need a cane or similar to get around. If you can walk without issue, you won't have any problems participating in this incredible experience! I typically visit WDW 3-4 times a year & have been fortunate enough to do several of the different tours. This one was the favorite of my traveling party of everything we've done over the years. It is AWESOME!

Thank you for all the replies. Hopperfan, thank you for the video.
It looks like a lot of fun. I guess strenous is anything more than walking on Disney park pathways.
The bridges did not look bad considering you are harnessed and is other safety features. I am not fond of heights
but this look ok.

HopperFan - for the rope bridge it looks like some of the boards are pretty far apart. I am only 5 feet tall. will I have difficulties? My legs are pretty short. I am booked the tour this June. Thanks

I'm 5'2" and didn't have any problems negotiating the bridge. Some boards were a bit further apart than others, but it wasn't a problem stepping out to them.

I did not go on it (I could never have crossed that bridge), my DS and DD did. Maybe someone who had a shorter member of their party go on it can answer for you.

DD8 did it with no problem at all. You'll be totally fine!

I'm pooh-sized (285 at the time of the tour) and had a great time! I'm 5'2" and while I had to take a couple of big steps on the bridge, it wasn't bad. The nice thing is that they have you let the harness hold you before you start to cross the bridge (just lift your feet up off the ground). Also, we had someone on our tour that didn't do the walking portion of the tour (I don't know why, I'm assuming they either had an issue with the harness or the test bridge you get to cross before leaving on the tour (about 5-7 feet off the ground)). They were on the truck that picked us up after the crocs and enjoyed the savanna portion of the tour with us.

I will say - this is probably my all-time-favorite behind-the-scenes tour! So interesting and fun!

@HopperFan - Thank you for posting your video! My husband and I are doing this for the first time in July and I am even more excited now that I have watched your video. It looks like so much fun!

DS and DD LOVED it! I was actually there with my other DS and we booked the safari hoping to see them. We happened to pull up to their safari jeep as they were getting pictures taken with giraffes .... giraffe was right at their jeep. It was cool to see them.
