Wigs and Rides

Weird question but I currently wear a wig due to hair loss from an illness. I haven't been to Disney World since losing my hair and am not sure how my wig will do on the rides. Any advice? Has anyone worn a wig to Disney adn done the rides ok?

There are some lovely headscarves that might be cooler and more comfortable than a wig on a day in the parks...a company called France Luxe will send you a free one that you can choose from their entire selection, and the materials are lovely silk prints. Just send them an email and they'll contact you with how to order.

There are also baseball caps with fake bangs and ponytails, or if you have any handy friends, headscarves and headwraps are easy to make...how about a soft Disney fabric or even a pirate bandanna?

I realize I didn't quite answer your question, but wanted to give you some alternatives to think about, just in case....I never wore my wigs because they were too hot and scratchy.

I was going to suggest finding a super cute headscarf too. They would hold tighter to your head and there are some really darling scarves out on the market.

If it's any consolation... if you could handle it, maybe try going without anything. It's a big step I know, but it may be slightly liberating.

Bonus is, if it doesn't work out, you can do it in a place where you don't know anyone.

A coworker of mine is battling a tough fight with cancer. We work at a high school (you know how teenagers are...) and there have been several days she lets her melon hang out in all of its bald radiance. She lost all of her hair through chemo. It was tough for her because she always had a thick, full head of hair, but she threw caution to the wind and didn't shy from losing her hair. I think she did it in part to show everyone that she is putting up one hell of a fight, but also I think she knew people would chatter if she wore a wig, so she's putting her hair loss right out there. It's been quite theraputic for the other girls in the office (she's the guidance counselor's secretary) and there are many Fridays that ALL of the couselors wear head scarves in support/unity of Theresa.

P.S. - I think the fast thrill rides (TT, ToT, RnRC, Space, BTMR, etc.) would be the only ones to cause you any trouble.

I think I would do the scarves, too. My hair is super thin and I do wear scarves sometimes...I think they're cute and i'm my OWN trendsetter.

I WISH I had the nerve to shave my head...when I see women with shaved heads, I think 'WOW, whatta powerful, secure woman...I'm envious'.

I've thought about it on occasion what I would do (cancer runs BIG TIME in my family) if I ever lost my hair, for whatever reason. I tell myself I'd just shave my head, but then I'd have my stylist to deal with!

She says my head is shaped funny and wouldn't let me go bald... she'd cut it short, but I'd have to keep it covered. Now, DS and DD, she said she'd shave it b/c their heads are nicely shaped! I'd still cut it all off, even without her permission. I think it would help me find a reason to keeping fighting whatever was trying to get me.

A few years back while on BTMRR, there was a lady a few cars in front of us wearing a wig. I felt soooo sorry for her as her wig was coming off and it was taking everything she had to hold it on. She was probably in her 60s and it was obviously very upsetting to her. Having said that, if you intend to ride roller coasters, Test Track or other fast rides, I would definitely wear a scarf or something similar, realizing for some it might be to avoid embarassment, but there is the possibility of losing the wig.

That stinks! I was terrified of losing my wig, so I baseball capped it most of the time. That being said, mine had just started growing back, so I at least had some peach fuzz if I needed to take it off.

egggzackly the reason my DH can never go really short (thank goodness he has a nice head of beautiful silver hair --at 66, not all men can boast that!)...he has a lumpy head. Not pretty nekkid.

I've worn a wig before. It was fitted at M D Anderson and fit pretty tightly. Of course, I didn't ride anything "exciting" because my doctor advised against that! I've also just worn a hat.

When my hair grew back, it changed texture and grew in thinner in spots. At first I kept on wearing the wig, but now I have decided that this is me--and if having thin hair turns any of my friends away, then they weren't really friends. Do I wish my hair looked better? Yes, but I've come to accept it the way it is!

Thank you all! I am really thinking of just blowing caution to the wind and going as myself. Who cares what others think. I will be at WDW and that is all that is important to me. Thanks for the encouragement!

I have no experience in this department but I just wanted to say that you should be as comfortable as possible to enjoy your trip, and personally I think you are brave and strong, so leave the wig at the hotel and have a blast!

I had a wig for our first trip post chemo and had no problems on any of the rides (RnRC, Test Track, Space Mountain). I was told that if the wig is fitted properly it should stay put. That being said, I do tend to ride the "thrill" rides with my eyes closed and my head down!

So do whatever makes you comfortable ... a scarf might at least make you feel more secure but don't count out "going natural" if you want ... just don't forget the sun screen!

Will be heading to WDW for another trip on Friday ... celebrating one year of being cancer-free ... and having my hair back!

Thank you for sharing! It is good to hear other experiences! I think I will take the wig, a scarf, and a hat and be prepared to use one of those or just go as me! I can be someone different each day of the trip!
