Hi..

I'm a single mom planning a trip to Disney World with my 13 year old son.

I have lupus and as a result, I have alopecia (very little hair). In my everyday life, I wear a wig.

However, I want to enjoy the rides with my son. I realize that wearing a wig isn't a good idea. Also, wearing a hat isn't a good idea.

I wish I could say that I'm confident enough to go to Disney World without either a wig or hat, but I'm not there yet.

In the past, I've seen photos of pirate bandanna hats that have Mickey ears sewn on top. I've also seen Goofy bandanna pirate hats.

However, I can find them anywhere to purchase..not even on ebay.

I just thought this would be a great idea to cover my head comfortably an fashionably, and still be able to go on ride. (No one would know that I had very little hair..they would just think I was a "fun mom". LOL)

So, I have 2 questions.

(1) Are these hats still available somewhere and, if so ..where?

(2) Does anyone else have any ideas of what I can do here?

Thanks!

My best guess would be the shop at the exit of Pirates.
There is a Disney merchandise number you can call with questions like this. I am not able to check at this point, but if you call that number, they should be able to help you and even order one by phone.
The bandanas I have seen like that are a cotton material and may have scratchy points, especially where the ears are, so you will probably want to get them ahead of time in order to cover any problem points.

There are also other options people have used, including more tightly fitting turbans and wig tape. There was a thread in the past year discussing this. I'm not someplace this weekend where I can do a search easily, but will see if I can find it.

You are no the first in your situation, so I'm sure you will get some suggestions from people who have been where you are.

Thank you so much for the info and for directing me to the other threads. I really appreciate it!

I know the ears were distributed to children on the pirate cruise at The Grand Floridian hotel a couple of years back. How soon are you travelling? I could look through my DD12s stuff and possibly find them.

I know they sell the Goofy ear ones outside of Pirates of the Caribeean, it has earings too!

Hi
I am a female with Male pattern Baldness... It sucks, I hate it. But I still have to go out and enjoy life. I love to travel ect. I started using Jerome russell spray in hair. It works awesome. I just don't go on rides that get soaking wet. But its nice to have the wind blow through my hair and not freak that my wig will be tilted. I buy like 20 bottles a time from texas beauty supply. But you can buy 1 at a time to try it out. Good luck hun:)

Even with the bandana ears, there would still be option of it flying off. Are you comfortable removing your hat once you pull out of the departure area for fast rides, then place it back it on while pulling back into the station.

I don't have hair loss, but my hair is a hot mess in the summer heat. I keep my baseball cap on till the last minute, then just lace my arm thru the back hole once we pull out of the station. Once the ride is over there is a short area where you can put your hat back in place.

Maybe look into a bucket style hat with a strap.

Theresamom - I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say Hi. My 18 year old son, who also has Down Syndrome, has Alopecia. He was born with more hair than any baby I've ever seen, then it started falling out when he was about 4 1/2. After about a year, it was completely gone.

I'm a cancer patient going through a similar situation right now. Last time I was at a treatment I bought an easy-to-use bandana type hat and a very light stocking-type hat which I plan on taking and shouldn't fall off on rides, but will keep my head covered. I don't want to wear my wig either, as it's one more thing to worry about. You could try a local cancer center or try Googling "alopecia hat" and see what you can find. I wish you luck! (I'm headed down at the end of September, and if you're going after that I'd be more than happy to report how they worked for me!)

I would suggest getting a pirate bandana from the pirates makeover. They are made to fit an adult head. On top I would buy any mickey hat, this way if you need to take off your hat( rarely you will need too) you will still have a bandanna on. Have fun on your trip, don't worry about other people just have fun!

Thanks to all of you.

My trip is in February, and I'm still trying to figure out what to do. I really appreciate the ideas and support.

You guys are great!
