Wifi on the Treasure

Can anyone give me an idea of the wifi quality on the Treasure (I know there's only been a couple of sailings so far)? My friend may have to work on our Feb 1 cruise (she just took a new job and won't have enough PTO) and she's wondering how well she'll be able to connect.

I know wifi on the other ships is pretty 'meh,' especially compared to other cruise lines (same friend was able to take Zoom calls on a Princess cruise earlier this year), but I wanted to check specifically about the Treasure since she's brand new. Any insight would be appreciated as she's trying to figure out what to do (go and try to work or not go).

Thanks!

There has been some reports online that DCL is offering the "newer" internet packages that they have been offering on a trial basis on the Fantasy this Fall... Basically the new "basic" offering is equivalent to the current Premium Surf package and the top offering is reliable enough to offer video streaming (and called Internet + Streaming). While where you are on the ship, where the ship itself is located and the equipment you use will impact performance, this is probably the "best" wifi you will get on a Disney cruise

It's improved, but you're on a moving vehicle in the middle of the sea. There are no guarantees. She should prepare for what she'll say to her boss if she's unable to connect when she's supposed to.

Assuming the new ships use Starlink or other satellite service (seems to be the case), the motion of the vessel has no effect whatsoever on a satellite signal - satellites travel 2x or more the speed of sound sending a signal to a moving target (earth) that rotates 1.5x the speed of sound. So motion is not a factor.
If the signal is strong and there are no major climactic obstructions (storms, snow, overly cloudy days, super windy), the internet will work perfectly well even in the middle of the ocean.

Yes, but that is a lot of ifs. If I was not allowed to take time off for a vacation, I would not want to risk my job betting that everything works out. Celebrity uses Starlink (I hate that we have to give Musk money) and it was not perfect this summer in perfectly clear conditions.

Bottom line, if you're lying to your boss you're risking it not working and then having to explain how you were on land but couldn't connect - especially if there were no known outages in your area.

Who said anything about lying to their boss?!

My friend is an adult and she can make her own choices. All I was trying to do was get a sense of the quality of the internet onboard. I certainly understand ship wifi is not perfect, but I wanted to hear from people who have actually been on the Treasure and can comment on their experiences with it.

She may not be planning to, but it's not unheard of for people to go with "internet is usually ok" and go on cruises (or other vacations) while not telling their boss and they try to get work done while on vacation. IMHO not telling them - especially when you've been told you can't take time off - and praying the internet wherever holds out is akin to lying.

Bottom line, for an educated choice she should be aware that there is a possibility that it will not work and will be obvious she is not "working from home".

Again, who said anything about lying to her boss or not telling her boss? I think you are making some assumptions here based on what you've heard from others. She's not been told she can't take the time off, just that she doesn't have enough PTO. You seem to be assuming my friend is trying to do something bad here. At this point she is investigating her options and will work with her boss to figure out what the best plan is.

FWIW, internet outages can happen anywhere when working remotely. Yes, perhaps there's a bit higher likelihood of that happening on a cruise ship, but it's certainly not the only place.

LOL. In other words, don't count on it working all the time. No way to know if the problem is the ship's WiFi system that connects you to the Starlink, or the Starlink, but on cruise forums people report that Starlink is an improvement, but not flawless.

the same logic applies to your own home... not flawless there either, don't count on working there all the time, and so on.
I don't count on my home's wifi to work all the time.. in fact, during bad weather I assume we'll lose connection, and we have many times, sadly. there is no technology that is 100% reliable, much less the internet, even less so on a vessel that is constantly at the mercy of the elements.

It's Elon Musk. He just sends so many people's emotions spiraling.
I don't care one bit about him, I think hating him or anyone just for having money or any other traits we lack or are different from ours reflects poorly on own our state of mind.. oh there's good internet on DCL because of Elon Musk? Elon who? Dont care. Just give me good internet.

The whole "I have to work while on vacation" thing is foreign to me in most cases. My last employer blocked access to employees who were on vacation for a week or more. Their lawyers advised that legally, an employee on vacation is untouchable and can't do any work, and that is why they took that action.
Certainly, the self employed would be a different issue. My last cruise was in 2019 on Celebrity, and we did not use the Internet at all for the week. Our next cruise is in 2025 on Princess, and I have no intention of using the internet then. However, I will have to use my cell phone and the ship WiFi to access some of the things that used to be done on paper. Not happy about that as usually on a cruise our devices stay locked in the safe for the duration.

I hadn't thought about it before reading this thread, but since DCL has switched to the new system/provider (Starlink?), neither my wife nor I have had an interruption in internet service. 9 cruises so far with the new system.

wow cool... do you recall how the speeds were? constant even in the middle of the ocean?

Remember with the 'older' internet system, as soon as you hit the open ocean far from land, it was soooo slow and spotty?
we've only sailed a couple of times with starlink apparently being the internet service, and it was definitely way better than in all our previous sailings.

I don't recall speeds, sorry. Constant access for everything short of video (I'm cheap and get the mid grade service). It's leaps and bounds better than the old system. I never question whether I'll have access now. I agree, this is a great upgrade in service by DCL. Remember the MASSIVE whining about service (deservedly so)? Don't really see that any longer.

Just off the Dream. I had the basic plan. No issues with internet. It was at least as good as at home. For some reason I could not make calls but I think that is a carrier issue because I am home and still cannot activate internet calling but I was able to do FaceTime calling but the connection wasn't the best for FaceTime calling.
