If you are using the app to check the navigator rather than having a printed version, do you need to have WiFi purchased in order to do so?

No, you don't. Put your phone in airplane mode, and there is free wifi to use for the app. The app includes a chat function to text with people on the ship, has all the menus for the whole trip, all the activities for the whole trip--so you can see all the days/times an activity is happening and you can favorite the ones you're interested in. While I loved the paper navigator, especially to bring home, the app has so much more.

You do need a WiFi- capable devise, but you do not need to purchase the ship’s WiFi in order to use the Navigator app.

The Navigator app says it provides free access to other Disney sites, including Walt Disney World, Disney Vacation Club, and the Disney Cruise website, but that access has sometimes been very slow.
