Widget vs app

After doing some searching on the internet, I think I may know the difference between a widget and an app. Please let me know if I am correct. A widget is something that does a small function on the screen, like weather and if you go into it it can take you into a full application which will do more. Please correct me if I'm wrong or put it into easier terms to understand.

I thought, but I am probably wrong, that an app is an application on the iphone and a widget is an application for an android phone. Just a difference in terminology.

In programming terms the OP has it right... Not sure about android terminology.

I have a Droid and it has both apps and widgets.

I've always thought basically the same thing as the OP.....but I admit to being sort of techno challenged. As long as I can figure out how to work it, I rarely try and figure out the why and hows of it.

That cracks me up. I guess I should just try to figure out how they work instead of why! I am techno challenged too!
