Ok Have you ever seen Jim Kramer's "Am I Diversified?". Well I like to be covered for all ranges in lenses. Right now I have a 70-200 L f/2.8 I USM. I am thinking about getting the 24-70 L f/2.8. However I would also like to get a bit more of a wide angle lens. I was thinking the 16-35mm f/2.8 II USM. However I noted a prime wide angle; the 14mm f/2.8 II USM. The 14mm is however 500 dollars more then the 16-35mm. Is that extra 2mm worth the money or is there something else that makes the 14mm that much better. By the way this is for a 50D body.

Have you considered the 10-22? I really like it, and some say even though it's not an "L" series, it should be.

Maybe you should consider renting both lenses and test them out? That will allow you to make an informed decision and not suffer any buyer's remorse.

Whether that additional 2mm is worth is so subjective...if you ask a die hard wide angle fan they will say "most definitely". If you ask someone who likes, but does not love, wide angle shots you may get a different answer.

Good luck!! :thumbsup2

I don't know much about either of those lenses. But the 16 end of that 16-35 is "only" 1 mm off of Canon's 17-55 f/2.8, which gives a little more range. It's not L quality, but many say it's close. I have one and absolutely love it.

Have you considered the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8? Not an L lens, but once again, a great lens. I had that one and sold it to get the Canon 10-22. I like the range on the Canon better, but do miss the 2.8.

On a crop body, 16mm isn't very wide. I'd be looking at lenses at least 11mm. I use the Tokina 11-16 and Sigma 8-16.

+1 for the 10-22 on a crop body. I used it for a while on a 40D and was very happy with it.

The Canon 14mm is a great piece of glass that is sharp at the corners wide open and whose distortion in well controlled (almost no distortion from what I could tell), but it's way overpriced, IMO. Also, you can't attach filters to it because of the protruding front element.

Re: the Tokina 11-16 f/2.8

Is Tokina coming out with a new version of this lens? Deos anyone know the scoop? Is it prudent then to wait if you want one now? Will the new one be appreciably better?

Any help appreciated...as always....

I spoke with a rep at Tokina and he said there is a new version coming out but if you are shooting Canon go with this one as the change isn't significant. For Nikon, he said the motor will be different (in the mount? I think that's what he said). But again, no big change for Canon.

He expects the price on the existing one will drop $100...but the new ones won't be out until September.

"Tokina has announced an updated version of its highly-regarded 11-16mm F2.8 wideangle zoom for APS-C SLRs. The AT-X 116 PRO DX II adds a 'Silent Drive-Module' (SD-M) focus motor that enables it to autofocus on all Nikon SLRs. The latest version also includes improved surface coatings (which are particularly important for wide-angle lenses) and adds a 'GMR' sensor to locate the focus element's current position, to speed up autofocus - a technology first introduced on the AT-X 16-28 F2.8 PRO FX full-frame wide-angle. US distributor THK Photo tells us the Nikon version should be available around April with a Canon version following around August."

There is no motor in the current Nikon mount, so it makes sense to update to AF-S. This is only significant if you shoot entry-level Nikon cameras. In fact, most people shooting above that prefer no motor in their lenses as it usually slows down AF.

Can't speak to the other changes, but a new coating on the lens should be nice.

Is it safe to assume that means the new version for the Nikon will be like the AF-S lenses, and auto focus will work on D5100 bodies?

Nevermind, Tom answered my question.
