Wicked

I haven’t seen it, although I have heard the soundtrack and like the music. I just keep thinking about two of my favorite movies based on Broadway musicals, The Sound Of Music and My Fair Lady. They both run longer than a typical movie to get everything in. I can’t imagine either one of them being cut into two parts, and having filler added that was not in the original Broadway show. They are much better as they are, one movie containing the entire show.
It is true that the movie of My Fair Lady kept nearly all of the songs and ran almost 3 hours plus an intermission. It also kept a few cast members from the Broadway version and was filmed entirely on a sound stage with limited visual effects.

The movie version of The Sound of Music, which also ran almost 3 hours plus an intermission, made significant changes to the songs, cutting 3 songs, adding 2 new songs, and moving several songs around. There were some minor changes to the plot too: for example, the scene with the Countess and Maria during the ball was not in the stage production. I think the movie is in some ways superior to the stage version, but it is definitely different. The stage production had closed about 2 years before the movie came out, so there were fewer people who could make immediate comparisons (and probably fewer people who could quote every line from every song than there are for Wicked).

There are still occasional movies that run for 3 hours (such as Oppenheimer) but they are clearly the exception and are not designed for families. I'm not aware of any movies made in the last 20 years or so that were shown with an intermission.

The team behind Wicked had to choose between creating a very long movie, removing some songs and plot elements to get to shorter running time, or keeping most or all of the songs and splitting the movie into 2 parts. I understand why people are not happy with the decision they made, but I also understand why they made it.

I think it would make more sense to me if there was going to 12 months between parts one and two
