"Wicked" the book...

I saw the musical first and fell in love with it, so naturally it made me want to read the book. I knew that it was supposed to be "darker" than the musical before going into it, but yeah it was soooo different. I liked it ok, but I am still absolutely flabbergasted how someone could read that book and think, "This would make a great musical!" I see the musical as the "Disneyfied" version of the book. In fact it seems very similar to me to what Disney did with The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They both have their place.

Son of a Witch, I heard nothing but bad things about it so I never bothered to read it.

Definite respect for the creative mind to be able to make that musical out of that book.

I read Wicked and loved it, but then saw the musical a couple days later and was so bothered by the disparity. I have since seen the musical again and love it, although I agree that it loses a lot of the meaning that the book conveyed. I also liked Son of a Witch, but "A Lion Among Men" (about the cowardly lion) and "Mirror Mirror" (Snow White) were SUPER out there.

I thought the book was okay, but always thought the musical was super indulgent and pop-y. I never thought the score or writing was anything innovative or impressive.

I tried to read the book before I saw the show and was like what????? so I put it away. Then I saw the show, and I'm thinking of trying to read it again, but I think I might not bother.

I couldn't finish the Lion one. I feel like I should try it again some day.

I really liked the book. Son of a Witch I will rate as the worst book I have ever read. My friend complained to me about this horrible book she just read. I asked if it was Son of a Witch. She admitted that it was.

Clearly you haven't read A Lion Amongst Men then! I did quite like Out of Oz though.

OP, have you reached The Philosophy Club yet? That has to be the weirdest chapter of a book I've ever read!

I read the book years before the musical existed. It was ok - I like the idea of the story but didn't care for his writing style. I finished it but never read any others.

I LOVED the musical.

Ex husband has many books by that author and enjoyed them all. I read Wicked and one other. They were terrible! Love the musical tho!

Yes- I read over half and then quit. I hated the book but love, love, love the musical.

I tried to like the book I really did. My SIL went on and on about it but I just couldn't finish it. I hated it. But I LOVE the musical.

I loved Wicked I had sympathy for Elphaba that I never had watching the Wizard of OZ. I've never seen the musical.
