Why would I want to go with you?

Sadly this is just a vent.

We have been enjoying our DVC for 5 years now. We have invited different family members to join us and no one has taken us up on it. Anyway, while visiting with family this past week we talked about the fun we have on vacations. My extended family didn't understand why no one has joined us. My sister informed us, "If it has characters involved, I'm not interested!" I suppose it is just more fun for us.

Some of our extended family lives in Florida and it looks like they may join us at some point.

I guess my sister is right......the only thing you do in the whole of Disney is look at characters.:confused3

That sounds like a pretty limited "field of vision".

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make 'em drink. ;)

maybe your sister is afraid of characters and is afraid to go?

Sorry to hear that..... We invited friends to come with us in December (no kids trip) and were going for DH birthday. We got an awsome airfare so they said yes. For the entire 3 months prior all I heard from DH's friend was "my type of vacation is sitting on a beach or by a pool, I want to relax blah blah blah" I assured him and his wife (who was very excited about going) to do what THEY wanted we will do what we want. Well let me tell HE had the most fun of us all! Loved the rides since he was there last, Le Cellier for dinner, Osborne lights, MVMMCP and 2 bedroom unit at BLT! They kept thanking us after the trip, think it will be easy to get them to go again.

The 1st time we visited with our boys aged 4 and 6, my sister bought them autograph books. She thought they'd really like to be able to have them for the future. Well one morning at Epcot after standing in line for about 5 minutes my 4 year old looks at me and says: "Mom we want to go on the rides. If you want to see the characters go ahead but we want to go on the RIDES!!!"

Ever since then we still laugh at all of those people waiting in line while we are on the rides. Same goes for the parades - they are NOT interested since it will take away from the rides.

Disney is all about what you make it!

I could also enjoy just people watching and enjoying the sights and sounds of Disney too. Which I have done while pregnant and unable to ride.

I agree. Disney is what you make it. We enjoyed a restful 6 nights last Summer at OKW. We didn't go to the parks.

Don't feel too bad -- people change! When my husband and I told my (grown and married) stepdaughters that we were buying DVC. The younger one blurted out "Don't expect me to go!" The old one exclaimed "We can come, right?!"

Which is worse, I ask you: the family who refuses without being asked, or the family that invites themselves????:rotfl:

I said nothing, but I rented a tree house for next year and invited them both. And now EVERYONE is going.

The moral? When people see how much fun everyone has, they want a slice. Which is its own challenge...

I can relate.....took my Mom and Dad with DH and DD (16)....stayed at AKL Savannah view rooms(2 studios)....well my Dad had a blast....my Mom ruined our vacation.....nothing but complaints. You get out of it what you put in that's all I have to say. Nothing will replace the look on my Dad's face (72 years old) after he got soaked on Splash Mountain....not wet.....drenched.....I have been on that ride 100 times and never got that wet.....worth it to me to see him laugh and clean his glasses :) At least one of them had a magical time and that's fine with me.:thumbsup2

I know how you feel. People do not understand our love for Disney and many think Disney trips are just for children. Perhaps, you will come across other people who would jump at such a wonderful opportunity and enjoy it. In the meantime, enjoy your trips yourselves. This way you know you will have a good time.

We made the mistake of practically begging a family member and his SO to join us once. We kept telling them they'll have a great time and they'd get to stay in their own room with their own bathroom, we provided tickets to the parks, with nothing to pay for but their own food if they ate out in the parks and souvenirs. Well, I learned the more the merrier is not always true especially with people who weren't excited to go in the first place. Don't worry about your family not wanting to go. Do not try to persuade them, just have fun on your own.

I've just about got my BFF (who is a beach lover) converted!! We went last year for a long weekend and only went to one park. We had tea, enjoyed the pool, shopped and had some great meals. We are looking forward to a little longer trip with our moms this year. My mom is rolling her eyes but wants to come to spend time with her long time friend. My mom just wants to relax and do a little parks. We are only doing Epcot twice this time. I gave my mom strict instructions that no whining about too much food, or fattening food allowed! that was all she did the last time i took her with the grandkids. It's vacation for goodness sakes!:lmao:

My kids loved the parades when their were a little bit younger and whenever there was a show going on in front of Cindy's Castle they would stop in their tracks and would not leave until the show was over - it did not matter one bit to them if we had fast pass tickets or just wanted to do some rides.

They were mesmerized by these shows and so we learned early on that despite all the planning sometimes you just have to stop and let them enjoy the moment and for little kids enjoying the moment whether its the sudden appearance of a character or a show or a parade - these moments go a long way towards a happy vacation

She's obviously never taken a solo trip for her birthday and stayed at BWV and walked over to Epcot for F & W Fest. Then again, I did meet a few characters ;)

After 9 day straight in the parks it was good to stop and watch the shows, parades and fireworks!

We have the opposite problem - it seems ALL of our families want to come with us! Moms, sisters with their kids, etc...the only issue being, I feel the more the merrier sometimes and my DBF feels that way NEVER! He wants to bring the kids and thats it for now...of course, to be fair to him, this is still new to us, and my mom does live in our finsihed attic so he may feel its not much of a vacation if we arent getting away from everyone/thing. No one is very flush right now with cash and would find it hard to make it possible, leaving us to want to pull up the slack for them but we cant easily do that either right now. On the flip side, he HAS mentioned a few times how nice it will be to bring the moms one day....

I am always one to want to show others what they are missing - I mean, we are right in knowing what they could be experiencing! To those, I just say 'fine by me...thats less people there making it crowded!' and then I bring my pictures out and watch their jaws drop. :rotfl:

This is a great story!

We once invited friends to join us and reserved a studio at BCV for them which they gladly accepted, but then told us they were not going to buy Disney park passes, instead they would rent a car and drive to "other Orlando theme parks" because they liked rides, not characters!! I smiled and nodded thinking...oh well, it is your vacation to waste!!

But slowly, over time, as we discussed our plans, Disney tranportation, the great restaurants, etc. they changed their minds and ended up staying on property all week, getting the dining plan and enjoying all the restaurants and Disney's parks. Now they are HUGE Disney fans and enjoy planning every moment of their next Disney trip just like us!!

So, there is hope!:)
