My DH has this problem. There is never a time when he has a day off, sick or otherwise that the phone doesn't ring. He had shoulder surgery and the yahoos were calling that day too. I wanted to take away his cell phone!

First of all DH was high as a kite and the calls were all BS!!

, I just got what you were saying. I think you should just forward all the calls back to the office and let it be, I think the Doctor will get very defensive if you call his wife out. He already knows what she is doing and really does not give two cents about it.

OP - do either or both your phones have selective call forwarding (making the suggestions to forward your calls to work on your off days even more convenient) or call screening? If you don't have those features, check with your phone companies; see if their offered, and add them! Voila! No more calls from work.

It sounds like you really need to talk to the doctor. There is absolutely no reason for you to get called like that on your day off.

I would also make sure there is at least one person that can handle any issue that may come up while you are out. Put a list together and give it to everyone and tell them to refer to your back ups when you are out b/c you are no longer available on your days off.

Your situation is not the same as my dh's, but he was told, "it is not like it was years ago, when you take a day off or go on vacation, you always need to be in contact if you want this job."

And that's fine if they make that clear to you when you are hired. But it sounds like nobody other than the lazy office manager actually has this expectation of the OP.

I always tell everyone at work if they need anything while I am out on vacation to call my emergency number.. They ask what's the number.. and I reply 9-1-1.

Unfortunately, most states are "at will" employment states. That means that the employer can fire anyone, at any time, for any reason that isn't illegal, or for no reason at all. (So there is usually no reason given.)

In the current economy, I've yet to see an employer who was slow to remind you that there are others waiting for your job who will be more of a "team player", and willing to do the job for less money too.

Still... It sucks.

pick up and immediately put the receiver back down. Every. single. time. they. call. Next day at work "Oh, I REALLY need to get a new phone! Mine keeps dropping calls"

Pick up and pretend you can't hear them - "Hello? Heellllloooooo??? Anybody there? Hello????? No? OK, I'm gonna hang up now"

You might blow a full day or so doing this but, I would think they'd either buy you a new phone (funny how the new one has the same darned problem) or quit calling you on your days off.

then when you are back in the office the next day, play the voice mail in speaker phone mode while you are in the presence of whoever called you. and then ask them what the emergency was?

If it rings, look at it. If it's work, don't answer.
Eventually, they'll get the message.

Yes! And even if they call all day every day, don't give in. Don't answer. They'll only do to you what you allow them to do. A ringing phone is annoying, but you can turn the ringer off, or put it on vibrate if it's a cell, or set it to go to voicemail after fewer rings.

Why do I get a million phone calls from work every time I take a day off. Every time. I have tried ignoring them, I now have 7 voicemails on my cell and my home phone has been ringing all day. What is this emergency you ask? Nothing. It was something that could easily have been left as a note for me for tomorrow. I told them NEVER call me at home unless it is an emergency. The phone literally rang 30 minutes later. I am not answering the phone. Figure it out people, you are all adults. Not that bright apparently. And when they ask the office MANGER she tells them to call me. NOPE.

I think from now on, phone off the hook. Ugh it is ringing again. I have caller ID you idiots, I am not picking up. So much for relaxing.

Just because the phone rings does NOT mean that you have to answer it. Take it off the hook and don't think about it again, or mute the ringer and ignore.

OR, answer the phone and tell the person on the other end "Sorry it's my day off, someone else can deal with it or talk to me about it tomorrow" then hang up.

The last time I went to WDW the only reason I didn't get any phone calls was they forgot to dial the area code for my cell since I was out of the area.

Ummmmm, no matter where YOU are they don't need to dial your area code. It's when YOU want to make a call from out of your area that you need to dial the area code. Apparently, they didn't need to speak with you when you were on vacation.

Lots of places you've got to dial the area code for EVERYONE, even if you're calling next door. At least that's how it works here in CT.
