Let's see. Not really hard to figure out
Their YouTube video has gone viral.
They are getting national attention.
It is getting posted on Disney chat boards.

Probably end up on the Today Show with Meredith asking "Why".

$500.00 to have your 15 minutes of fame? Not too bad of an investment.

This. He made the local news tonight. Said he wanted to be the first person to do that. The news reported that he does work and paid for the Ipads with his own money.

Soooo......he did get what he wanted and he's getting his 15 minutes now.

Aside from destroying it, really, when you think about it, it's not any different than a woman spending that kind of money (and more) on a wedding dress that she'll wear once. Or a wedding cake. Or skydiving.

He basically spent the money on an experience and as long as it was his money that he earned, I see no harm in it.

Though I do agree, had it been my money, I'd have spent it on something else.

I'm actually surprised how durable it was. I don't really see the big deal, at least they didn't go blow it all on booze or drugs. The last night I went to the bar with my friends in my early 20s cost about that much, and I don't remember it...I think he spent his money better than that lol.

I saw the video on facebook.I don't understand the mentality of some people, if they have nothing better to do with their money and time, they can go to a shelter or to a charity and donate their money and time for something positive. It makes me angry to see people just wasting money when many others have nothing.

I'll never understand the mentality of "he could have given it to charity, he sould have done something to help people", or how it can make someone angry Why? He worked for his money, he earned it and he can do what he pleases with it. You are free to give any money you earn to charity instead of spending it, but why be angry when someone else choose not to.
Funny, one could say that all the people on the DIS could have given what they spent on their WDW vacations to charity, however nobody does

It was my opinion, I don't expect you to understand it. Spending time with your family at Disney or else where is not just about the money, is about the time you spend with your family and that at least TO ME is priceless. besides i didn't know that spending out time at disney was a destructive way to spend time and money... That's the point.

I would never, never buy an item just with the intent to destroy it so people can see me doing it on youtube, it doesn't make sense to me, I guess because I don't have the money to waste it and I rather spend it on other things, but again that's just me, and I don't expect others to agree with me, and I would never encourage my kids to do something like that, I try to teach them to appreciate what they have and how hard it is to earn it, how bless we are to have what we have because so many have nothing, and we should be thankful for what we have and not for what we don't have.If I ever see my kids doing something like that, I would be so sad and embarrass but again that's just me. I just gave my opinion on the topic of this thread not on the opinion of others.

I was disappointed in the video. Not because he destroyed the iPad - it was his money and he can do what he wants with it. It isn't what I would do, but he certainly accomplished what he set out to do. Everyone is talking about him, after all - even us! I always anxiously await the videos where people destroy new gadgets. I was hoping this one would be more like the others that I like. I really love the ones where people drop the gadget, and step on it, and scrape their keys on the screen, etc. I like to see a real world example of exactly how sturdy the objects are before I decide whether or not to purchase one since I know I'll drop it or forget and shove it in a bag with my keys or something like that.

Why did I do so many things when I was between the ages of 18 and 24? Because I was an immature male. We do a lot of silly things.

I'd say that sums it up pretty well! Of course males aren't the only ones. . . . immature females do some pretty stupid things, too.

I don't know how those kids paid for their iPad, and I'm sure your experience with cars is true, but:

I'm tired of reading this as though it was gospel truth. Both of my daughters had late model used cars given to them on their 16th birthdays, and they both drove and still do drive responsibly. No tickets, no speeding, no breaking the rules, just nice safe driving to school and around town throughout their teen years. OK, DD21 got a speeding ticket her senior year after oversleeping the morning of one of her AP exams, but...

I just don't think you can make that generalization to everyone who doesn't have a part time job to pay for a car. There are lots of responsible teens out there whether they work or not.

I agree completely. My parents gave me a car when I turned 16, and they actually wouldn't allow me to get a job. My job was to get good grades and to graduate with honors. They didn't want me to spend time at work when I could be studying and doing school work instead. I've still never had a speeding ticket. I don't still have that first car - it was a Plymouth (which weren't exactly the most reliable cars, as it turned out) and it self destructed a few years later. I do still have the car they bought me when the first one died, though. It needs a new paint job and I rarely drive it but other than that it's still in great shape. The fact that I didn't pay for it had no bearing at all on the way I cared for it.

I intend to do the same thing for my son. In fact last week I bought the car I intend to pass on to him in a couple of years. He's a responible person, and I don't think the fact that he won't have to pay for the car will make him value it any less.

People waste their money on all kinds of silly things. Starbucks, iPads, Disney vacations. . . none of those are necessities but people spend money on them anyway. I certainly wouldn't spend my money on something that I was just going to destroy. (Well, I take that back - I've purchased pinatas before so I guess I'm no better than that kid, just on a different scale!) But I do waste my money on other fleeting things, like vacations. I know - vacation dollars are really paying for quality time and memories. I guess this kid's money paid for a brief moment of fame and memories, plus "quality time" with his friends. I'm with Mickey's Minion on this - $500 for the amount of attention this guy has been getting is practically a bargain, especially for a teen!

I figure as long as I'm "wasting" any of my time and money on non-essential things (like Disney trips) rather than donating it all, I don't have the right to get angry at someone else for not giving enough of their time and money to charity.

I wonder if he knows he wasn't the first to do it? This was on TV a few weeks back, Daniel Tosh of Tosh.0 did this on his tv show. Hit it with a golf club. So instead of being first, he/they are nothing but copycats.

That appears to be fake, though. The iPad looks real at the start of the clip, and the brief shot of the back when it's on the table shows the correct logo. When they zoom in on the broken pieces, though, the logo is wrong. The destroyed thing doesn't appear to be a real ipad.

It is their money, I don't care what they do with it. Whether you buy the product and use it or buy it and smash it the same amount of money goes into the economy. People blow even more on things that are temporary. I know people that spend that much on Spa trips and within days of leaving the manicure is shot, the massage is over, and all the other temporary stuff you paid for is gone. As a PP mentioned, I think it is just as much of a waste to pay that much for a dress you will wear once.

To each their own.

If they are getting add share money on their YouTube channel they will make at least a portion of it back so it isn't actually a waste of the whole $500.

I couldn't tell you that. I watched the show with my boys a few weeks back, didn't pay too much attention to it. I just find it funny that he "wanted to do it first" and all he was doing was copying someone else. No originality. Even if it's a mock up, the idea was still there. There is a comment that this kid has a channel (?) and is quite vocal. If what was stated is true, it's truly sad that we are giving this kid any kind of spotlight.

The "charity" argument drives me INSANE. It's not up to everyone else to decide how someone wants to spend his or her money.
