Why were these rides removed from the parks

I remember the 20,000 leagues when I was young. It frieghtened me, but my brother loved it. I am having a hard time figuring out where it was...Can someone tell what it was next to/across from? Or even better have some pics of what is there now?

Take a look at this map. Number 29 on there (near the top of the map, just below the "Mickey's Toontown Fair" label) is Pooh's Playful Spot. Pooh's Playful Spot is a playground that replaced 20,000 Leagues. They filled in the lagoon and put a playground on top.

Wikipedia cites cost of necessary safety upgrades and non-compliance with ADA requirements as reasons for removing the Skyway both at Disneyland and WDW.

Nobody has ever fallen from a bucket in WDW, it would have made headlines if someone did.
Um... it did.

The WDW (Cast Member) was killed in Feburary of 1999 and the Skyway was shut down in November of that year. The same reasons why the DL Skyway was shut down are why WDW's did. The shutdowns had nothing to do with any deaths or injuries.
So both Skyways were shut down in the same respective years they suffered heavily publicized injuries or deaths, but not because of the injuries or deaths?

Sure, and I have some ocean view property in Kansas you might be interested in.

Yes, that was the official Disney statement (a line also parroted by Snopes.com). However, it wasn't the truth.

Speaking of the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Ride, I noticed an odd looking object while using MSN's Live Search Maps. It is sitting in the back of the “Legendary Years” main building. This picture here isn't as good as using the "Bird's Eye View", but I couldn't save the picture using it.

This link here might provide a better view http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=nqrgfs863v6y&style=o&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&scene=17485751&encType=1. I'm not that familiar with the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Ride at MK, but from looking at this picture it appears to look like a submarine of some sort. Maybe someone might have some additional info.

The birds-eye view that you linked to makes it look like a sculpture of a "Flash Gordon" type ship from the pulp magazines and comics of the mid-30s.

That is just an observation, not fact, but that is sure what it reminds me of.

Whatever that sub/space ship is.. placing it behind the incomplete " Legendary Years" Main Hall is somewhat odd..

I wonder if it's some kind of prop they moved there as an 'icon' or similar to be part of the finished landscaping in someway?

Very odd to find it there otherwise.

It is most definitely not this spaceship, but it reminds me vaguely of the "Pigs In Space" ship from the Muppets..

As for the arguing back and forth about why the Skyway closed, we all have opinions.

I suspect that perhaps only four or five members out of the entire DIS membership of 120,000 would be in a position to know the true reasons and I suspect those folks aren't talking. :)

EDIT: I was mistaken on the time frames.

The man jumped from the DL Skyway in April of 1994 and the Skyway was shut down in November of that year.

I dont know, 2 accidents and then 2 ride closures within the same year

Usually a ride will be closed due to multiple reasons and I think this is the case here

If it was just the accidents then probably not closed or just the cost factor then mayvbe still not

combine both and theres no way to avoid closing them

Thanks shorty82. I don't think I have gone to the toon town, no kids so didn't see a reason to. Are the water fountains still there? I want to look for them next time I go.
