Why the world series ?

While reading the World Cup thread , a question pooped into my head: soccer is , in my opinion , the only trully international team game. Why are the World series called the Worls series when only the Americans are playing ?

A.) It's not just Americans playing. A great deal of the players in MLB these days are from varying countries. And for that matter, it's not all US-based teams, considering the Toronto Blue Jays.

B.) It's just a name. But in theory, all the other leagues in other countries are, in essence, minor leagues compared to MLB. Which is why players from those countries often end up in MLB. Send a top MLB team to another country to play a top team there and there would be no contest.

My guess, and this is just a guess on my part so no one take this for fact, is that when baseball came up with the idea for a championship game, American was probably the only country playing it, so therefore, The World Series. Again, this is just a guess on my part.

Okay, I looked it up and the newspaper never sponsored the series so it's an Urban Legend and the name apparently grew from the idea that the series would be the World Championship of Baseball. So on with the discussion.



Actually way back when, when the baseball championship in America was first contested I think a New York newspaper actually sponsor the event. It was the World Daily Newspaper or something like that, so the championship was named the World Series because of the newspaper, not necessarily because it was the world championship.

At least thats what I think I recall hearing about the derivation of the name.
