I never stayed at GF but like alot of people its on my list. I recently read SL went full concierge. Could someone explain to me the difference between the 2 (SL & RPC) now??? Why would you pay the extra $$$ for RPC if the food offerings are the same. Are the rooms worth that much more $ ?? Thanks for the help.

The Royal Palm Club in the main building offers a better, more convenient location. It also has nicer views, including Magic Kingdom views.

The main difference to me was the overall layout of the lounge. SugarLoaf has a definite feel of a bed & breakfast. There's some limited tables, a few couches, no TV when we were there last and the staff is located in the same general area. Because it's all basically located in the ground floor lobby, it lacks a view, but it feels cozy and quaint.

RPC is much more spread out. The staff is on the 3rd floor while the lounge is on the 4th floor. It's all open to the main lobby below, so it feels much more airy, especially with the high ceilings and many windows. Seating is more abundant and there are 2 tvs (one is kid sized). In the evenings you can hear the piano and GF orchestra playing on the balcony below. The 3rd floor also has a good sized balcony for concierge guests to use. The monorail is right on the 2nd floor. I'd say that it has a certain ambience.

It's really just personal choice though.

They also serve wine and liquors, where the others do not. It is very nice staying in the main building...espically when it's hot, just get off the monoail and up the elevator!

Gonga, SugarLoaf has recently changed to a full service concierge lounge. They do have wine, beer, late night desserts, cordials and expanded on-site CM hours.

when we checked into SL last week to find that is was full concierge!
(Will they now increase the price?)

Than ks, I did not know that :earsgirl:

No problem. It's a nice change that they seemingly put in overnight. A great surprise for those that were checked in I'm sure. It's also my understanding that after the upcoming rehab to the 12th floor of the CR, it will be the same way. They'll have a full service lounge and the expanded offerings. I'm sure prices will end up reflecting these enhancements at some point though.

PavelB,

Would you Please, please, please post a trip report on SL was at the GF with the new changes? How was your room, the staff, mousekeeping? What were the food offerings? After the bad reviews of late, I'd love to hear a review of SL.

Thank you!

SO what would justify a price difference between these two floors, besides room versus suite? Do you think there might be a different benefit to staying 14th? I know views at the GF RPC, chance of castle, differentiates RPC and SL. But at CR it would only be a matter of what floor you are on.

Will this make full concierge at the Contemporary an option for families of 5?

Your best guesses would be appreciated!

I might be getting excited about this!

I think the only cost justification would be that the 14th floor is still fairly exclusive, with there being only 5 standard rooms and 11 suites. The ratio of CM's to guests is going to be fairly low and the lounge definitely less crowded.

My guess is that there will be accommodations for families of 5 on the 12th floor, thereby opening up another opportunity to experience full service concierge. This one might have to go on my "to do" list.

This was the first time we had done concierge. Last year I was never able to get a room. This year I had called several times but the SL was booked. (I even called that morning from the RPH at Universal and was still told that there was nothing available. This was however, the Saturday that Dennis was threatening. They did have several cancellations and so we were able to get a room. Well, it was sure worth it.
As I said I had no idea that they had expanded the concierge. Let me say that the food was generally fantastic. There was a nice continental breakfast from 7 until 10:30: bagels, croissants, cereal, ham, cheeses, juices, etc. There was a snack midday - we were only there at that time once all week. There were veggies and dip, cookies, chips. Early afternoon, until 3 or 4 I think, they had the most delicious cookies and scones, with other desserts. My diet was totally busted! There were rice krispie treats, brownies, raspberry tarts, etc. From 5 to 7 they had wine and beer (I think I saw champagne that first night?) and hot and cold hors d'oevres: mushroom puffs, chicken satay (always some type of chicken), salads, meatballs, olives, tomato and mozzarella salad, some spicy cucumber salad that was great, cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, salmon puffs, salsas, mussels, really all sorts of nice little appetizers. I easily could have just eaten there. (My husband and sons though just saw it as a prelude to a big dinner.) Off to the side there was a table with other children's selections, I am not sure what- I seem to remember chicken nuggets. And again those great desserts! From 8 until 10 there were the cordials and again those great desserts. (Just for your info, my son was with a friend in the main building and he said their food was exactly the same as that served at SL.)
My kids just loved it. Every time they walked through the lobby they grabbed something to nibble on and to drink. (Note - the hot chocolate machine was broken for several days - that was a little disappointing)
Our experience at the Sugarloaf was just incredible. I don't know how we could go back and not go concierge. All the staff was lovely. Housekeeping was perfect - she saw what we were using and brought extra towels, etc. without being asked. I know that some people have been unhappy with the service at th GF but all I can say is that our week there was just perfect.
(I wish I could say the same about the parks! We really thought it was much more crowded than usual - and we go every July. My husband and kids said that next summer we should go back to the GF, stay at the SL, and forget about the parks!!) Now, if you want to hear about the 5 fantastic nights at Universal....love that FOTL!

PavelB - WOW!!!! :flower:
