DDP is still in its infancy. in its first year, WDW learned the hard way that if there is a way to get around the rules, it will be done (i.e., using kids' credits for adults, "phantom guests" during
free dining, using credits for other ppl, etc).
so they started closing some loopholes.
then they reoffered the plan, but actually enforced the restrictions, rather than relying upon ppl's integrity

, causing a huge outcry, similar to the one you see now ("i'll never use DDP again", "other people don't realize they're getting ripped off", etc).
what WDW didn't fully consider was the fact that plan could still easily be "maximized", by using it
only at the most 1TS expensive restaurants, eating
only the most expensive items. also, a lot of food was simply being wasted (we heard/saw quite a few guests comment that it was "too much food", but who continued to order everything simply b/c it was included.

). the plan was simply being used as offered, so no one was "cheating". there were simply more guests who were knowlegable about the plan's offerings, & who wanted to use it to its fullest (again, nothing wrong with that), than there were guests who didn't.
IMHO, the DDP wasn't thought out well enough initially. the plan was originally devised assuming that there would be a greater amount of unused credits, & more lower to mid-priced dining (buffets, lunches), so it would average out. the 2008 shows that they are simply rethinking how to continue filling the restaurants while maintaining some sort of profit margin (mostly using the requirements of non-discounted rooms, & passes to add to the "bottom line", & using DDP as the loss leader).
much of the backlash you're seeeing now is simply b/c the old DDP was a incredible deal for almost
all guests, rather than the more "sensible" deal it is now (btw, DH said he felt like he was "stealing" when we used the old plans, & we didn't even "maximize" it

lol).
the 2008 DDP isn't right for everyone (just as the same pass or same resort would be), but it is still beneficial for some, without the need for "maximizing". for others, the DDE would be a much better choice, & then there are some for whom eating off-site is the "perfect fit".
btw, i didn't think you were being mean

. there really are only a few "bashers" (tho they tend to be more vocal

); the majority here are content with their decision to use the DDP or not, & don't feel the need to convince anyone that their decision is the best for everyone...
it's just the way of the web

lol
& welcome to the DIS!!
