People who don't want to drink don't go to the bars.
People who don't want spa treatments don't go to the spa.
People who aren't religious don't spend time in the chapel.
People who aren't into bingo don't go play bingo.
Why can't people who don't like casinos...just not go to the casino?

Because that takes up space that can be used for multiple things. A LOT of space.

I think most telling is they've gotten rid of the arcades. If they're getting rid of those, I REALLY don't see them adding casinos.

While I agree they likely won't put in casinos, the arcade comparison seems off. The arcades were generally for the kids, and with the games in the clubs it doesn't makes sense for them to spend money in the arcades. While the casino would be an adult activity while their kids are in the clubs ignoring their parents. Half the time we had to put down our foot to get our kid to go to a show with us.

The real tell is that in the main dining room you can uncharge your meal with one from a specialty restaurant on RCCL. that is an example of the constant upsell

(Sorry, language barrier here) Do you mean that you can "upgrade" your meal for a certain amount and get ... a steak from the specialty dining steak house for 20$ more?

If that's what you are talking about: I love love love having that option! Done this many times on Carnival.

I think you're making a good point about the usefulness of multi-purpose spaces on a cruise ship. Something like the D-Lounge could be used for performances, game shows, karaoke, meeting space, casual light dining, etc. Even additional pool space can be used for gatherings on deck since the pools have hard covers. A casino is just a casino, and can't be used for anything else. I appreciate the flexible use spaces on a ship.

On the Dream/Fantasy they could probably convert the District Lounge/La Piazza space into a casino with impacting too many people. On every cruise I've been on, I've rarely seen more than a handful of people in that area. Could be put to better use.

But you have to walk through those areas to get to all the other lounges, don't you? I mean, I know there are back ways, but they aren't as convenient as walking through La Piazza.

A lot of people here seem turned off by the idea of having to walk through a casino to get to other stuff.

That is the way back to the other lounges - which are used for sine al-ages events during the day. There would be a HUGE pushback if people were having to walk through there - even if non-smoking and not operational (as when in port) to get to other locations.

Big old nope there.

I was typing the exact same thing.

I keep seeing the argument that any space on the ship that isn’t normally packed is by definition underutilized, and I strongly disagree.

I pointed that out yesterday:

I missed it. I'm sorry! :(

Ever since I did the most recent iOS update on my iPhone, I've had zero issues with the MDE app crashing (apparently a lot of people are having issues), but my Ad Blocker browser app crashes with these boards continuously so I miss a lot.

No need to apologize. I just pointed it out since it seems that some people are making suggestions as to how to add a casino without actually reading the whole thread.

For one thing, DCL wants to sell rooms at a higher price point than its nearest competitors. The lack of a casino helps justify that. To me, the classic look of the ships and the traditional rotational dining, it's all part of a more nostalgic type of cruise experience that would be marred by jangling slot machines. If I wanted to go to Vegas on vacation with my kids, I would, but I don't.

Not that I am suggesting that they add a casino, but I don't agree with your argument. I don't think kids using the arcades DCL used to have brought in the same amount of revenue as a adults would spend in a casino.

Yeah I'm not a fan of doing that. I'm glad that on some ships it's out of the way and you're not forced to go through it to get to wherever.

From my experience on land, casinos are depressing soul sucks.
To be honest I never join a table where the vibe isn't good. You're there to have fun and maybe win money. If you're with people who are really grinding it out, yeah it will feel like a depressing soul suck (great term by the way).

It was not meant to be tit for tat. But an analogy. The argument can be made that arcades are the gateway to casinos.
