Why sign up for DVC?

Silly question - and I know the "to each his own" response...

But I was wondering -

I usually rent points. I'm thinking about having a family reunion at WDW in about 18 months (if family bites when I mention it at XMas). So I thought it might be a good time to buy into DVC, rather than renting.

Is purchasing worth it in your opinion?

I'm not sure I see ALL the benefits...

(told you this was a silly question  )

Because the Rent won't always be $10 a point and you still have to get someone to book what you what.

Now I think you could Rent and be happy for a long time but not my 50 years worth.

If you own then you get to find out the secret DVC Handshake. It's well worth the $15,000.00;)

And you find out that your $15,000 purchase won't get you a GV at BW at the 7 month time?????

If you want a GV, make sure you buy where you can get a GV at 11 months.

Just remember, that if you ask 15 family members and get a GV and a two bedroom, undoubtedly one entire family will cancel 29 days out and two more will cancel 14 days out. And you'll be stuck with room for 20 people and only 8 going.

Hey! I didn't know you know my family!! (You forgot the part where someone in the remaining members will berate you for not "planning better"...) :rotfl2:

Wow! I got ripped off...it cost me more than that to learn the handshake :teeth:

Its all in the planning....renting that many points from 1 owner could be hard to do. Especially when you figure in the 7 and 11 months marks. But I also wouldn't consider buying just to help with this particular trip.

One "silly question" deserves another.

Any one feel like there are enough DVC members at this point?

As much as I want to be helpful, I'd love to say "NO, DVC is not for you." Now that statement would be a little selfish as I love my DVC and it is a great program. It just would be nice if there were no more members. :rotfl:

Anyone else have that knee jerk reaction to potential new owners?

No flames please just being honest.

Not in the least. There are over 300,000,000 people living in the US today. Add Europe, Canada, South Am, Japan, Australia and you still have a pretty exclusive club.

HBC....now you know you're not supposed to be giving out that kind of information. Don't make us put you on double-secret probation! :smooth:

This is not a bad question...it is at the heart of many people's concerns about buying into DVC. My response would be that if you like the DVC accommodations over the other on-site options, and plan on going to WDW at least every other year for the next few decades, then it is probably well worth purchasing. Look at the long thread on this board about problems with renting...even though it's a small percentage the bottom line is you are not dealing with a company like Disney with that transaction, you are dealing with an anonymous individual.

But beyond that, it really comes down to how important it is to continue to vacation "DVC Style" at WDW for many years to come. If you see the pattern continuing, it will be better for you to purchase rather than rent points year after year. Good luck in your decision! :)

I'm not flaming you, but don't share your concern. To me, the more DVC members, the more influence we wield as a group. Think about it...100,000 members coming to WDW (and VB & HH) every year and spending money. That's a huge group of people who are loyal customers, and that number is growing. It would seem to me that it can only help us in negotiating discounts and perks.

And I think some of the perks we get are because Disney is still building and selling new DVC properties. Those perks are surely part of the sales pitch and as long as they're selling, they won't want to pull back on them.

Of course, if I hadn't bought where I wanted to stay the most, then I might have a different opinion. Then I'd see new members as "competition" for 7 month window resort reservations. Fortunately, I bought where I wanted to stay.

By the way, this is a good question that probably should have been on its own thread rather than taking this one off topic.
