My DH and I are seriously considering a move to Florida in the next 3-4 years, possibly sooner. We've been checking out the area while on our Disney visits, but don't have any first hand info from people who already live there. My aunt lived in Port Orange, about 5 minutes from Daytona, and that seemed like a nice area. We are looking to be NO WHERE near the Orlando city area. We'd prefer to be closer to the ocean rather than the gulf side, and approximately no farther than one hour to Disney, closer if possible. We checked out a nice town by the name of Windermere while at Disney last week. Homes seemed to range from moderate to outrageous. We prefer rural to urban. Need a little land, an acre would be nice. Don't want to be able to shake hands with my next door neighbor from inside the house if you know what I mean. DH is an outdoor type person, needs to be able to have a moderate sized garden. Any suggestions on why we should move to your town? Jobs wouldn't be an issue, I'm an RN and can work anywhere, and DH is in medical sales and would travel anyway.:D

Well You may want to consider Polk County...

We are about 30 mins from WDW, about 45min in either direction to a major airport, and you can drive to either shore. Polk county offers lots of land options also. We boast MANY cancer research centers so if you are in the medical field, this is a great town. Both Orlando and Tampa are within easy distance, so you have more choices when it comes to stores and the like.

I love it here. I have lived here for almost 4yrs now and wouldnt go back to Orlando area ever. Please consider it...

How about Brevard County, specifically the Melbourne Area? We are less than 10 minutes from the Ocean and about an hour away from WDW. The cost of living is pretty good, though property prices are rising across central Florida. There are plenty of medical facilities here.

I'm not crazy about living in Florida, but this is a very nice town, and it is growing.

Thanks for the suggestions. Miss Jasmine, why are you not crazy about living in Florida, if you don't mind my asking?

dont do it, they got bugs the size of small cars down there

Oh yeah ~ those bugs!! :earseek: :earseek: I'm with Pop Daddy on that one!! No way could I live there!

I would like to add , Im not afraid of bugs, but just happen to be in the mood to jog when I see them

Okay, I hate bugs, but where are these giant bugs located? I've been to WDW 22 times, and have yet to see any huge bugs. Snakes, lizards, and armadillos, these I've seen, but which area has the huge bugs?

Teresa,

I haven't moved yet, but we've decided on Clermont, in Lake County. I picked it because the schools are good, it's a hilly area, growing at a decent rate and its about 30 minutes from WDW.

Every time I visit the town (now we have a date for our move), I run into more transplants who tell me that they're happy they moved there! Friendly people everywhere.

My only disappointment is that I FINALLY have great neighbors on my block (after 5 years here) and we'll be leaving them behind.

Suzanne

Suzanne, we were thinking about Clermont. Are there any big bugs there, LOL? When are you moving? Would you mind keeping in touch with me to let me know how things are going, and if I have any questions?

I am actually moving to Windermere in June. Although it is in the middle of the city, the actual area of Windermere isn't terribly developed (yet!). I hope you find an area you like!

I agree, Clermont IS beautiful! That's because it doesn't LOOK like the rest of Florida!

there under the bed

As someone who lived in Daytona for her first 24 years of life, I wouldn't really say that's the BEST place for someone to live. It's a dead end town. There are no real opportunities there for people. We have special events that run that city almost all year, so there is almost always miserable traffic, rude people, horrible crimes. Unfortunetly, it's labeled as a "party destination" and that's EXTREMELY true. After Spring Break, Canadanian Spring Break and Black College Reunion, the beachside is completely trashed. Then there's Bike Week, Biketoberfest, Speed Weeks, Pepsi 400...more than I can't even begin to list.

While living in Orlando is better, I'd much rather move out of Florida. I hate the weather here, and Pop Daddy IS right...there are some huge boo-tay bugs here. When I moved to Orlando last summer, I freaked out when I saw frogs bigger than my hand (BIGGER THAN MY HAND!!!) on my porch. Never had those in Daytona!

Clermont IS nicer. I also like Altamonte Springs and Lake Mary.

We live in Lake Mary and really like it however if you are looking for a little more of a rural area with land then Deland might be a worth checking. I do not know much about it but have liked what I have seen..especially if you like a little more property. It is about 40 minutes or so from Orlando and less than 25 minutes to Daytona Beach. Maybe 45 minutes to Disney. All these times estimates based on traffic on I-4 of course. Good luck....

TeresaNJ, the reason I said I wasn't crazy about living in Florida is because there seems to be no reigning in Development. Development is going on all over but infrastruction is not keeping up. The schools are crowded, the roads are crowded, and heaven forbid property tax increases are ever thought about, as the elderly population gets all up in arms. We have no state tax so all the State's money is dependent on sales tax, and when tourism goes down, it really hurts. I also miss the seasons.
